NAWICAN FRIENDSHIP CENTREOperations ManagerReporting to the Executive Director at the Nawican Friendship Centre, the Operations Manager is responsible for the effective and successful management of facilities, quality control and safety measures, systems and principles in the areas of information flow and management, networking, and health and safety. This individual will be able to multitask, have familiarity with basic office procedures, and demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills. The Operations Manager oversees any maintenance or upgrades to Nawican Friendship Centre assets, including but not limited to buildings, vehicles, landscaping, and off-site health and safety, while adhering to operational budgets and time-sensitive projects. This person will be team-oriented and possess a desire to promote healthy living and the spirit of the Friendship Centre Movement.Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary liaison with utilities, government, and regulatory agencies such as fire, police, health and safety, building and hazardous materials inspections, etc.
  • Plan and coordinate all installations (telecommunications, heat, electricity etc.) and refurbishments, securing environmental or other permitting as needed
  • Manage the upkeep of equipment and supplies to meet health and safety standards
  • Inspect buildings' structures to determine the need for repairs or renovations
  • Improve processes and policies in support of organizational goals; formulate and implement organizational policies and procedures to maximize success of facilities and programs
  • Maintain safe and healthy work environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations
  • Review utilities consumption and strive to minimize costs
  • Supervise all facilities staff (custodians, technicians, security personnel, groundskeepers etc.) and external contractors
  • Control activities like parking space allocation, waste disposal, building security, etc.
  • Handle insurance plans and service contracts, keeping both financial and non-financial records
  • Prepare monthly reports on facilities and operations for the Board of Directors
  • May be asked to perform some of the necessary tasks of the Executive Director and other staff members in their absence, including but not limited to transportation of clients, goods, services
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills and ability to change direction and priorities quickly with a variety of changing operational needs
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and desire to work in a positive team environment
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with telecommunications, networking, and IT support
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Canadian history, culture, and organizations
  • Work well with a range of different individuals, with clear, effective, and polite communication
  • Experience with conflict management, decision-making, and business negotiation as relating to facility, vehicle, and event operations
  • Knowledge of budget development and financial reporting, data entry, and planning for upcoming projects and plans associated with Nawican programs and events
  • Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, procurement and contracts
  • Sound knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Experience in construction, maintenance, and all facets of facility operation
Qualifications & Experience
  • Grade 12 Diploma (or equivalent Adult Dogwood), with post-secondary education in related field(s)
  • Occupational First Aid and Food Safe certificates
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and Outlook) and Zoom or other video conference programs
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and/or urban Indigenous service organizations
  • Must be able to provide a current criminal record check
  • Class 4 or Class 1 Driver's License (or obtain within 3 months) with clean Driver's Abstract
Pursuant to section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to applicants of Aboriginal ancestry.Position will be full-time (40 hours per week), Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, with some weekends and evenings as needed.
