Role Summary

As the Operations Manager, Civil & Mechanical Solutions you will oversee and manage the day-to-day operations for all civil and pipeline projects. This includes all aspects of operations including safety, quality, execution, resources, schedule, staff, client relationships, contracts, cost, estimating and working with corporate services. In this role you will report to the VP of Operations.

Responsibilities

\xc2\xb7 Safety \xe2\x80\x93 Projects need to be completed safely and as per our corporate policies and procedures. We want everyone working at or with Backwoods to go home at the end of each workday without injury with a feeling that Backwoods truly cares about keeping everyone safe.

\xc2\xb7 Quality \xe2\x80\x93 Projects need to be completed to the satisfaction of our clients regarding their specifications and drawings. We want our clients to be satisfied with the \xe2\x80\x9cend product\xe2\x80\x9d after the project is completed.

\xc2\xb7 Execution \xe2\x80\x93 Projects need to be completed in the most safe and efficient manner. Project teams need to understand the execution plan from the estimate and take that forward to the project. Work needs to be planned out in advance ensuing delays are minimized/eliminated. When projects are complete, we want our clients to say the project was completed in the most efficient manner with operational excellence.

\xc2\xb7 Resources \xe2\x80\x93 People, equipment and material resources for projects need to be planned out in advance and the right resources selected for the project. Resource selection and planning needs to consider Indigenous engagement, qualifications of our people, opportunities to train employees, selecting the correct piece of equipment for the task, cost of equipment, quality and cost of material, etc.

\xc2\xb7 Schedule \xe2\x80\x93 Projects need to be completed on schedule. Schedules need to be developed based on estimate schedule and actual field conditions encountered. Schedules need to be updated considering project changes, additional scope, delays, etc.

\xc2\xb7 Craft/Staff\xe2\x80\x93 Craft employees need to be selected and hired when deemed required considering Alexis members, Indigenous people, qualifications, etc. Craft need to be carefully selected to ensure they are the right person for the job. Current staff employees need to engage in the Backwoods mission, have clear direction and roles & responsibilities, be given the opportunity to be trained and develop their careers, be held accountable to their roles & responsibilities, etc.

\xc2\xb7 Client relationships \xe2\x80\x93 Current and future client relationships need to be consistently developed and be given your time and effort to foster long standing reliability, trust and dependability. We need to ensure communication lines with clients are clear and understood by everyone involved. Clients should \xe2\x80\x9cwant\xe2\x80\x9d to hire Backwoods for the next project, one reason being the positive and respectful relationship developed between Backwoods and the client.

\xc2\xb7 Cost \xe2\x80\x93 Projects need to be completed in the most cost-effective manner possible still ensuring all other aspects are completed successfully. Costs need to be understood, tracked and compared to budgets. Cost forecasting needs to be completed and communicated as required highlighting potential cost risks, overruns, underruns, etc.

\xc2\xb7 Estimating \xe2\x80\x93 All changes on projects need to be estimated and proposed as change orders to clients. These estimates need to ensure margin is maximized while demonstrating to clients the change is justified and priced fairly. Support corporate estimating as needed.

\xc2\xb7 Corporate Services \xe2\x80\x93 Projects need to be completed following all policies and procedures of corporate services. This includes safety, HR, CSR and finance; and

\xc2\xb7 Additional and alternative duties that may be changed from time-to-time by the Employer.

Qualifications

\xc2\xb7 15-20 years of progressive civil and Mechanical project management experience resulting in senior PM skills & experience with an excellent on-time and on-budget track record

\xc2\xb7 Proven field experience with multiple projects and disciplines in the Environmental, Oil and Gas and Forestry industries

\xc2\xb7 Post-secondary degree or diploma in related field and a PMP or working on it would be an asset but not essential

\xc2\xb7 5-10 years\' experience leading and managing multidisciplinary teams on civil and/or mechanical projects resulting in a thorough knowledge of construction procedure, equipment utilization, safe work practices and project controls

\xc2\xb7 Experience and knowledge in proposal preparation, risk identification and negotiations with subcontractors and suppliers

\xc2\xb7 Understanding of financial month end project reviews

\xc2\xb7 An experienced leader with the ability to train, coach and inspire team members

\xc2\xb7 Experience in developing project management programs

\xc2\xb7 Results focused with a proven track record in achieving operational goals

\xc2\xb7 Ability to work within deadlines and see tasks through to completion with the assistance of their team

\xc2\xb7 Strong emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills to foster working relationships with decision makers and key stakeholders in and outside the company

\xc2\xb7 Projects completed meeting or exceed expectations.

\xc2\xb7 Projects completed to client satisfaction with clients wanting to continue hiring Backwoods in the future.

\xc2\xb7 Considering Backwoods mission at every stage of the project from estimating to project close out.

\xc2\xb7 Employees (both staff and craft) enjoying what they do and wanting to come to work each day because they feel like they are appreciated and part of a team.
