Work is performed under the general supervision of a Maintenance Foreman and/or Maintenance Manager. This position functions as an Oil Burner Mechanic and performs skilled work involving the installation, maintenance and repair of all Iqaluit Housing Authority (IHA) public housing units.
The main function of this position is to service and repair oil fired heating systems in all IHA operated buildings. To work within the maintenance management system to perform those tradesmen duties listed below.
Responsibilities
1. Maintains oil-burners in IHA operated buildings to ensure a safe and efficient operation by:
cleaning and overhauling all oil-burner and related equipment (fuel pumps, blowers, vents, duct work, etc.) on a regular basis;
testing all overhauled and rebuilt oil-burners to ensure units are safe and in good working order;
installing new equipment when required
2. Inspects all oil-fired and solid fuel heating systems in IHA operated buildings to ensure satisfactory operation by:
conducting regular checks on all oil-burners;
diagnosing faults in oil burners and identifying repairs required to correct deficiencies;
completing inspection reports;
identifies deficiencies in and repairs chimneys and fireboxes.
3. Maintains domestic and industrial appliances by:
examining and testing appliances to identify deficiencies and determine repairs required;
repairing appliances and rebuilding components for reuse;
Testing repaired and rebuilt units to ensure they are in good working order.
4. Completes records for all maintenance and repairs by:
identifying supplies required and compiles material list;
completing work orders for all work assignments;
accounts for 7.5 hours of work each day plus any overtime
inventory and stock control as required
identifies inefficient systems and recommends replacement or upgrading
conducting efficiency tests on all heating equipment and records information
carries out preventative maintenance work as instructed by Foreman and/or Manager;
responsible for maintenance of heat recovery units in stalled in units.
5. On call for emergencies during winter months (November 1st-Apr 30) on rotational basis.
6. Identifies unsafe and hazardous conditions.
7. Cleaning of shop/machinery, sharpening tools, and servicing as required.
8. Assist other tradesmen in emergency situations;
9. As a certified journeyman, must train apprentice staff in skills related to trade so as to promote in-house training & promotion.
10. Assist district technical staff from time to time as directed by Supervisor.
11. Other duties as assigned

20. Ability to work while wearing required personal safety equipment which includes gloves, hardhat, safety glasses, safety harness, safety vest and steel toe shoes or boots
Experience and Education Requirement
The following may be gained through a combination of education, training, and experience.
1. Journeyman Oil Burner Mechanic Certificate;
2. Knowledge of practices, tools, equipment and techniques associated with Oil Burner Mechanic trade;
3. Knowledge of standard hand and power tools and equipment used in oil burner mechanic activities; ability to use and operate hand and power tools as needed in a safe, efficient manner;
4. Knowledge of safety standards/precautions pertaining to oil burner mechanic and ability to read and follow MSDS recommendations and requirements;
5. Ability to estimate materials and time required to complete various tasks;
6. Must possess and maintain valid Nunavut Driver's License and an excellent driving record;
7. Excellent work history and attendance record.;
8. First Aid certificate an asset;
Must have RCMP Security Check and be bondable.
Environment
1. Occasional outside work during cold weather is required;
2. Occasionally working in unsanitary conditions;
3. Pressure may be exerted on employee by the community as he may be one of the few technically trained plumbers in the community;
4. Discretion in responding to requests for service and material is required.
5. Working in obnoxious odors.
The work week is Mon-Fri from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Regular repairs of housing units require time be spent in all units managed by the Iqaluit Housing Authority. Much of the work is routine, and must be accomplished in a timely manner. Work load is controlled by the needs or demands of others, rather than falling under the control of the incumbent. Maintenance supervisor will prioritize jobs according to housing requirements and needs.
Housing and travel will be paid by the employer.
