Sunbeam Developmental Resource Centre (SDRC) is the single point of access to developmental services for children in the Region of Waterloo. SDRC provides case management and clinical services to individuals with developmental disabilities and/or Autism Spectrum Disorders. SDRC also assists them and their caregivers in connecting with community services and supports. The successful candidate will be required to work flexible hours Monday - Friday. The successful candidates will be based out of our Kitchener location but required to travel throughout Waterloo Region (with the potential for occasional travel outside of the region).
As part of our Brightside ABA Services (https://brightsideabaservices.com/), the successful candidate will plan and provide Occupational Therapy assessments and treatments to clients, and document information such as relevant clinical data, progress reports and outcomes. This position will also provide clinical input and suggestions related to the care of clients to ensure that quality of care is delivered and help them develop, recover, or maintain daily living. This role will primarily work within the OAP Urgent Response Program using the mediator model to provide consultation rather than to provide long term direct therapy.
Responsibilities:
Utilize specialized occupational therapy knowledge and skills to encourage/facilitate activities of daily living skills, productivity and leisure
Provide individualized assessment and intervention as well as program planning/implementation, policy development, consultation and education as part of an interdisciplinary team and with families.
Consult with other professionals involved, to define the appropriate plan of action of the specific individuals case
Ensure that Individuals are involved in identified therapeutic programs, which meet specified goals.
Provide on-going analysis of individual's progress towards identified goals
Documents pertinent information as it relates to the delivery of Occupational Therapy services;
Recognizes variations in the continuum of health by implementing Occupational Therapy interventions, which promote, maintain and restore health, prevent disease and injury and provide comfort.
Ensures that the practice of Occupational Therapy is conducted in accordance with the Code of Ethics as stipulated by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapist, and all provincial regulatory bodies
Understands and complies with the legal requirements of licensure, legislation, scope of practice, and policies and procedures of the company
Protects the individual's belief and values and the right to confidentiality, privacy and dignity;
Perform other duties as assigned.
Assessing sensory needs and providing recommendations for a sensory diet
Provide recommendations for gross motor activities
Provide recommendations for sensory equipment, and write letters for the families to submit to OAP so expenses can be covered with Core Clinical Budgets
Consult with the ABA teams to help inform their approach
Support with client self-regulation and body management
Interoception programming
Attend planning/community partner meetings to share information about recommendations
Report writing to be shared with family and community partners
Attend URS team check-in meetings with the URS coordinator, family, and service providers at Weeks 4, 8 and 12 (minimum of 3 team meetings per client)
Education/Experience:
Graduate of a recognized Occupational Therapy program - BSc. OT prior to 2006 or MSc OT. Post 2007
Registered and in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario C.O.T.O
1-2 years of experience in occupational therapy is essential
Experience in program development and consultation at the individual and program level would also be an asset.
Education and experience in working with developmental disabilities and/or Autism Spectrum Disorders, familiar with its impact on all aspects of functioning.
ADP (Assistive Devices Program) authorization status an asset.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.
Ability to function within an interdisciplinary team
Previous experience in urgent response or time-limited intervention models (preferred for OAP Urgent Response role).
Ability to adapt to and work effectively within a variety of situations, and with various individuals or groups
Demonstrated ability in problem-solving and critical thinking
Able to generate new solutions and develop creative improvements
Commitment to service excellence including continuing education and continuous quality improvement.
Demonstrated ability to assist clients, and family members with concern and empathy; respecting their confidentiality and privacy and communicating in a courteous and respectful manner
Familiar with the Services and Supports to Promote the Social Inclusion of Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act, Child, Youth and Family Services Act, Personal Health Information Act, various other federal and provincial legislations, directives and guidelines, corporation bylaws, policies and procedures.
Familiarity with the special challenges presented by Dual Diagnosis with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Experience working with groups and families.
Excellent consulting and oral/written communication skills.
Experience using a consultative model in a community setting.
Excellent organizational skills and time management.
Knowledge of Trauma Informed Services.
Valid driver's license, clean driving record and reliable transportation.
