Job Description


The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is seeking a full-time, temporary (6 months) Occupational Therapist to work in the General Forensic Unit C (FGUC). Reporting to the Manager, you will be a member of an inter-professional team which provides care to clients detained in the forensic mental health system on a minimum security unit under the jurisdiction of the Ontario Review Board (ORB). Using evidence based intervention, clients are provided with specialized psychiatric and discipline specific assessment along with intensive care using Cognitive Adaptation Training principles. As an Occupational Therapist you will be working toward enabling patients, through assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to re-integrate in to the community. You will be responsible for formulating treatment plans, monitoring the response of patients to therapeutic interventions, participating in the preparation of Ontario Review Board (ORB) reports and participating in the Unit risk management program. The Occupational Therapist will provide a range of rehabilitation services for individuals including initial assessments to determine clients\xe2\x80\x99 occupational skills, risks and needs, overall rehabilitation readiness and to evaluate mental status. You will lead therapeutic and psycho-educational groups and provide individual counselling to support clients\xe2\x80\x99 rehabilitation goals and needs. You will also be expected to be involved in program planning and evaluation and quality assurance initiatives. You will liaise with other services within CAMH as well as community agencies to coordinate care for clients. You will be able to work with clients from diverse populations; contribute to program development; provide education support and supervision to students and participate in the research activities of the program. This position is located at the Queen Street Site.You must be registered and in good standing with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO). You must possess a Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Occupational Therapy (or a Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Occupational Therapy plus a Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in OT, Rehab Sciences or a related field), combined with three years of experience working with individuals who have a serious mental illness. You must also have membership in either the Ontario Society of Occupational Therapy and/or Canadian Association of Occupational Therapy and be a holder of COTO\xe2\x80\x99s pre-requisite Professional Liability Insurance. You also must be eligible for adjunct/status-only appointments with university faculties associated with Occupational Therapy that has affiliation agreements with CAMH. You have strong group facilitation skills. Experience in formal risk management strategies and thorough knowledge of the processes and framework of the provincial forensic system and the ORB are definite assets. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to work within the inter-professional teams and to engage with clients, family members, and community care providers. Demonstrated ability to work with clients of diverse backgrounds is necessary.
