Pay Rate: $35.10 per hour



Status: Full-time, Contract

Position:



The Occupational & Physiotherapy Assistant (OTA/PTA) will support the Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist at Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig Elementary School. This role involves providing therapy services that promote students' physical, developmental, sensory, and mobility needs. The Assistant will help students gain independence, improve functional skills, and succeed in their educational environment.

This position requires cultural sensitivity and a deep understanding of Walpole Island First Nation's values, traditions, and community needs. The Assistant will collaborate with students, families, educators, and health professionals to integrate both therapeutic and culturally responsive practices.

Requirements:



EDUCATION:

High school diploma required. Post-secondary diploma/degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physiotherapy Assistant, Kinesiology, or related field preferred. Certification as an OTA/PTA (or related program) is an asset.

EXPERIENCE

:

Experience working with children in school, clinical, or rehabilitation settings preferred. Knowledge of sensory processing, motor skills, and therapeutic exercises. Familiarity with adaptive equipment and techniques to support independence. Experience working with Indigenous communities or in culturally responsive settings is highly valued.

SKILLS & EFFORT REQUIREMENTS:

Strong communication and collaboration skills with students, teachers, families, and health professionals. Ability to support individualized therapy plans and interventions. Knowledge of physical, motor, and sensory development techniques. Ability to promote mobility, independence, and functional participation in school tasks. Culturally respectful, recognizing the role of family, community, and traditions in wellness. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

OTHER:

Valid Ontario Driver's License and dependable transportation. Vulnerable Sector Check required. Must live an addiction-free lifestyle. Valid First Aid & CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).

Responsibilities:



Assist in Therapy Sessions:

Support the Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist in providing interventions for students with physical, sensory, or developmental needs.

Implement Therapy Plans:

Carry out individualized therapy programs (fine/gross motor, sensory integration, mobility, and rehabilitation activities).

Monitor and Document Progress:

Keep detailed records of sessions, progress, and observations, reporting to supervising therapists.

Collaborate with Educators & Families:

Work with teachers and families to integrate therapy strategies into classrooms and home life.

Support Skills Development:

Promote sensory, motor, strength, balance, and coordination skills through individual/group activities.

Adaptive Equipment:

Assist students in using mobility aids, adaptive tools, or modifications that increase independence and inclusion.

Group Sessions:

Help facilitate group therapy to build social skills, mobility, and independence.

Cultural Sensitivity in Practice:

Ensure therapeutic approaches respect and integrate Anishinaabe culture, traditions, and language.

Other Duties:

Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned.

Working Conditions:



Work Environment:

Primarily school-based, with therapy conducted in classrooms, resource rooms, and during individual or small group sessions. Interaction with students, teachers, parents, and community members.
Schedule:

Full-time hours, Monday to Friday, during regular school hours. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for meetings, training, or school events.
