Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Director, Human Resources, the Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) is responsible for assisting with the design, delivery, maintenance and evaluation of a prevention orientated occupational and environmental safety & health program for the clients it serves. Working independently, as well as in collaboration with others, the OHN advocates for workers and worker groups to promote health in a safe and healthy work environment. Working in collaboration with the worker/worker group, employer, union, health professionals, and others, the OHN assists clients with health issues through informed decision-making.

The OHN manages and administers an Occupational Health Service within legal and professional parameters which may include: conducting health examinations; assessing the work environment; providing prevention strategies; providing health education and health promotion programs; providing counseling interventions and programs; managing the data collection and information system; conducting health surveillance programs; assessment and follow-up of work related injury/illness; participation in return to work planning and monitoring of occupational illness/injury trends; developing education and wellness programs applicable to non-occupational illness trends; program planning/coordination/delivery; policy development and cost-containment strategies.

Within the Safety Coordinator role, the incumbent is responsible for assisting with the development and maintenance of all prevention-oriented Occupational and Environmental Health & Safety programs at Misericordia Health Centre.

Experience

  • Five (5) years nursing experience to include three (3) years Occupational Health Nursing.
  • Experience in community health, ambulatory care, critical care or emergency nursing preferred.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health policies/protocols/programs, disability case management, Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba programs and processes, Manitoba Workplace Safety & Health Act and Regulations and additional education appropriate to the work setting.
  • Experience developing, implementing and improving Occupational Safety programs, preferably in a health care environment.
  • Developing and conducting workplace safety and health educational and training programs and materials.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing with current CRNM registration.
  • Occupational Health Nursing Certificate.
  • A combination of applicable training, education, skills and experience may be considered.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Canadian Certification in Occupational Health Nursing preferred.
  • Registration as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or similar designation preferred.
  • BLS Certified.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Works within the Centre\'s core values, philosophy, vision, C.Q.I. goals, policies and procedures.
  • Must possess the ability to work under minimal supervision showing organization, adaptability, individual initiative and judgement.
  • Proven organizational, communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive, professional interpersonal relationships both internally and externally to MHC.
  • Assumes responsibility for ongoing education and participates in professional activities for personal and professional growth.
Physical Requirements
  • Physical and mental health to meet the requirements of the position.
This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.

The WRHA legal entity includes Churchill Health Centre, Deer Lodge Centre, Grace Hospital, Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg, Pan Am Clinic, River Park Gardens, Victoria General Hospital, WRHA corporate programs, and WRHA community health services. Effective April 1, 2024, Golden West Centennial Lodge will also be part of the WRHA legal entity.
