Sinai Health is seeking a respected and experienced nurse to coordinate our Nursing Clinical Extern and Learner Program under the direction of Nursing Education at Mount Sinai Hospital.


The Nursing Student Extern Mentor/Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the Nursing Clinical Externs and learner'spractice and integration into clinical areas in accordance with organizational and professional standards, and in collaboration with clinical teams. This role will foster an environment that promotes quality, excellence, collaboration and shared leadership.

In this role you will:




Support training, mentorship and integration of externs and learners at the organizational and unit level Establish a clear onboarding and education pathway for externs and learners Contribute to extern and learners onboarding, ongoing education and development within their defined scope Create, adapt and deliver orientation, learning and professional development resources Assist externs and learners to learn about and understand their role and scope of practice Provide ongoing support and mentorship to clinical teams in understanding roles and responsibilities for nurses working with externs and learners Support extern scheduling and departmental assignment Implement organizational guidelines for the extern and learners scope of practice, and delegations to support practice where required Support development and implementation of standardized extern assignment and supervision structures and tools in clinical areas where Externs practice Collaborate with clinical programs to optimize extern utilization and nursing learner volumes to provide required patient care Coordinate and deliver preceptor/mentor training for nurses working with clinical externs, learners and new hires Maintain regular unit presence to support ongoing education needs and tracking of required skills attainment Evaluate and evolve the structure for ongoing extern and learner practice area support (e.g., debriefs, check-ins, ongoing laddered education, issue resolution). Provide ongoing monitoring and evaluations of externs and the overall program Collaborate with PCMs on performance evaluation and remediation Support monitoring and tracking of budget and human resource allocation Promote Clinical Extern staff wellness and team well-being Serve as a liaison and conduit between the unit leadership, Professional Practice and Clinical Operations Support transition to practice for externs and learners transitioning as new graduates into RN/RPN roles at Sinai Health Contribute to the onboarding and orientation, training and education of new employees including participants in the Nursing Graduate Guarantee Support the development and implementation of academic practice education and training initiatives in collaboration with Professional Practice and Quality Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required Job Requirements

Job Requirements




Mandatory


Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in good standing 3 years of nursing experience Previous experience teaching, working with learners and/or preceptoring




Preferred


Nursing experience in an acute care OR rehabilitation/complex continuing care environment Previous experience as a clinical instructor or placement supervisor Preceptor/mentor training and experience with nursing learners




Skills and Knowledge


Demonstrated excellent clinical skills and competencies Comprehensive knowledge of nursing competencies and standards of practice with an ability to evaluate learning needs and implement practice/performance improvement strategies Commitment to collaborative academic practice; experience in advancing best practice/evidence-informed initiatives Understanding of principles of risk management, emergency procedures and infection prevent and control preferred Demonstrated leadership, change management and problem-solving skills Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; professional, diplomatic and confident with a proven ability to work with individuals across all levels of the organization. Excellent organizational and time management skills with the proven ability to prioritize competing demands Strong computer skills (e.g. proficient use of Microsoft Office and web-based interfaces, etc.) Proven demonstration of workplace excellence shown by commitment to strong job performance and attendance
