The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a self-directed advanced practice nurse functioning as an integral part of the division of Gastroenterology (GI), reporting to the Patient Care Manager of Gastroenterology and to the Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit. The IBD unit at the University of Calgary represents one of the premier centres in the world recognized for its leadership in clinical care, education, and research as well as championing the role of the IBD NP nationally and internationally. The primary responsibility of the NP is to provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis (including ordering and interpretation of tests), intervention (including prescribing of medications), education and appropriate referral management of clients diagnosed with IBD, predominantly Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). The Gastroenterology IBD NP works closely with the multidisciplinary team which includes two other IBD NPs, nurse clinicians, and specialist MDs with a predominant interest in IBD. There are opportunities for the NP to actively participate in leadership, program development, research and clinical teaching activities.

As a Nurse Practitioner (NP), you will provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across their lifespan. You will be responsible for integrating clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine to assess, diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to manage and meet the health needs of patients. Additionally, you will utilize advanced practice nursing competencies related to Clinical Practice, Leadership and Optimizing Health Systems, Education, and Research to increase care quality, promote appropriate use of health services, and inform and influence healthcare systems.
