Reporting to the Program Manager, Calgary Pain Program, the NP works independently and within their advanced Nursing scope of Practice, to provide expert consultation to providers and staff caring for adult patients with underlying chronic pain in the 4 acute care facilities and the Calgary Pain Program at RRDTC. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) integrates clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine in order to assess, diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures in order to manage and meet the health needs of patients (International Council of Nurses, 2020; CNA, 2019). NPs have a broad and autonomous scope of practice with the ability to provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across their lifespan. NPs contribute to collaborative inter-professional care through the advanced practice nursing competencies of advanced clinical practice, education, nursing leadership, and research. NP utilization of advanced practice nursing competencies has demonstrated benefits for increasing care quality and promoting appropriate use of health services, as well as informing and influencing healthcare systems (CNA, 2019).Consult Service (CPCS) incorporates clinical practice, education, consultation, research and leadership within the service delivery area. The CPCS NPs are expert pain clinicians who receive requests from Family Physicians, Specialists and staff for support/advice in managing patients with acute on chronic pain. The NP uses their experience with adults and chronic pain pharmacology knowledge to assess and provide consultative service to providers. In addition to the clinical focus, the NPs design, develop, delivery and evaluate education sessions for medical and nursing students, staff and patients. The NP works autonomously within the broader interprofessional pain program team.
