Position Overview

StreetReach is part of Tracia\'s Trust, the Manitoba government\'s strategy to prevent sexual exploitation of children and youth. The StreetReach program currently includes a Winnipeg team with representation from child welfare, law enforcement and non-governmental organizations who work collaboratively to respond to children and youth at high risk of being violently victimized through the sex trade. StreetReach team members believe that child/youth sexual abuse, regardless of the causes (sex trade, family history, third party pressure), is a complex community issue. It is recognized that many of the youth involved with StreetReach struggle with both mental health and addictions issues, and the inclusion of clinicians with such expertise on the StreetReach team is invaluable.

MAIN FUNCTION:

Under the general direction of Team Manager as part of the multidisciplinary team, the Nurse Practitioner (NP): * Applies advanced nursing and medical theory to the provision of clinical care, autonomously ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing pharmacologic agents and performing minor invasive procedures.

  • Applies current/relevant nursing and medical theory, which allows for contribution to knowledge, development and involvement in advancing the nursing profession.
  • Incorporates medical knowledge and advanced nursing knowledge; integrates this knowledge and experiential base into clinical practice.
  • Demonstrates competence to practice autonomously in the implementation of strategies to promote health and prevent illness, is proficient in planning, implementing and evaluating complex care, and demonstrates competence to teach others.
  • Provides for problem solving among staff or between staff and patients/residents/clients and with physicians and multidisciplinary team.
  • Applies skills in consultation, collaboration and systems management in providing effective care.
  • Complements physician services in the delivery of comprehensive healthcare.
Experience
  • Three to five years\' experience working with youth impacted by co-occurring mental health and addictions issues in a mental health and/or addiction setting.
  • Experience working within and with multi-sector organizations.
  • Experience working with sexually exploited or high-risk youth an asset.
  • and background working with vulnerable youth in a community-based setting an asset.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Masters of Nursing, Nurse Practitioner Stream or equivalent educational preparation as approved by College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Nurse practitioners have the authority to provide extended practice nursing care if they are competent to provide that care, the care is endorsed in the practice setting and is within the scope of nursing practice as defined by the CRNM.
  • Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) preferred.
  • Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of active registration on the RN Extended Practice (EP) Register of the CRNM.
  • Class 5 Driver\'s License and access to a vehicle required for some aspects of the position.

  • Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Working with vulnerable youth experiencing co-occurring mental health and addiction issues.
  • Completing mental health and addiction assessment, including suicide risk assessment, mental health status.
  • Ability to recognize serious mental health symptoms (e.g. psychosis, dissociation) which may be associated with mental illness, trauma, and/or substance use.
  • A thorough understanding of harm reduction and experience utilizing harm reduction strategies in interventions with youth;
  • Treatment interventions including individual, systems and multiple service providers.
  • The ability to provide case-specific and generic consultation to service providers regarding youth mental health and addiction issues.
  • Knowledge of biopsychosocial models of mental health and addiction, including the social determinants of health.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trauma and its impact, including the effects of colonization and inter-generational trauma on Indigenous youth.
  • Knowledge of a range of therapy modalities related to complex trauma, emotion- regulation, harm reduction, risk management.
  • A good understanding of the Stages of Change Model and application with youth who use substances.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the range of mental health and addiction services available to youth.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships with children, youth and care-providers.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships to work within a multi-disciplinary team of community-based organizations, child welfare agencies and health and justice systems.
  • Advanced nursing care knowledge related to health assessment, diagnostics, pharmacotherapuetics and invasive and minor surgical procedures.
  • Regional/Facility/Unit policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts.
  • Principles of collaborative practice.
  • Roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team.
Physical Requirements
  • Flexibility in working hours & locations in the community will be required.
This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
