The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) - Acute Pain Services provides leadership and promotes excellence in pediatric, family-centered nursing care through the five main role components of expert practice, education, consultation/ collaboration, research, and leadership/change agent. This PNP integrates nursing and medical skills and knowledge within a broad scope of advanced nursing practice. He/she assumes a leadership role by influencing clinical practice while balancing inter-professional collaboration and autonomous practice. The PNP is a member of the Acute and Transitional Pain health care team, working with the medical and clinical team to support patients who present with acute and complex pain and their families. The PNP collaborates with the physician team, other health care providers and management to facilitate program development and implementation. The care provided is comprehensive and responsive to acute and complex pain needs in order to support the best outcomes for the children served. This PNP integrates research into practice and creates, utilizes and/or disseminates new knowledge. In practice this PNP role includes but is not limited to diagnosing and managing common and complex health conditions, promoting health and preventing illness/injury, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other therapies and performing procedures, interventions and/or treatments with children and youth with acute and complex pain issues. Nursing activities performed are determined by legislation, regulation, professional body direction, Alberta Health Services (AHS) policy, educational preparation, practice setting, patient need, and competency of the individual NP.

As a Nurse Practitioner (NP), you will provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across their lifespan. You will be responsible for integrating clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine to assess, diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to manage and meet the health needs of patients. Additionally, you will utilize advanced practice nursing competencies related to Clinical Practice, Leadership and Optimizing Health Systems, Education, and Research to increase care quality, promote appropriate use of health services, and inform and influence healthcare systems.
