Job Summary:

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Nurse Clinician, PIVOT Program, provides and coordinates nursing practice activities related to the care of children and youth requiring antimicrobial therapy, inotrope therapy, hydration therapy, and/or palliative care while living in their home communities. This includes patient intake and referral triaging, initiating, facilitating and coordinating pediatric intravenous (IV) outpatient therapy (PIVOT); working in collaboration and liaising with families, health professionals and regional/community professionals and agencies; coordinating and facilitating teaching and support for children/youth and their families; providing educational sessions and material to staff and community health care professionals and agencies on PIVOT and vascular access in a manner that is consistent with established policies, standards and philosophies at BC Children\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital (BCCH).

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse with the Yukon Registered Nurses Association (YRNA)
  • Completion of post basic specialty nursing certificate/program if applicable, and three (3) years recent related experience in tertiary pediatric nursing and IV therapy and central venous catheter care and management, including one year in an educational or leadership role, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • CPR Training \xe2\x80\x93 Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) \xe2\x80\x93 Level I.
  • Eligible for the Canadian Vascular Access Association (CVAA) certification.
  • Valid BC Driver\'s License and access to personal vehicle for travel outside of existing geographic area may be required, and will be compensated in accordance with applicable collective agreement language.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of community based OPAT services for children and youth.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the British Columbia College Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) standards for Nursing Practice.
  • Comprehensive skill and expertise in tertiary pediatric services and related issues
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current practice approaches and \xe2\x80\x9cBest Practice\xe2\x80\x9d standards in the delivery of outpatient IV therapy and vascular access in the pediatric population, including care, repair/maintenance and troubleshooting of lines, equipment and other parts.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, demonstrate, facilitate and lead.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively to children/youth and their families, dealing effectively with those experiencing stress and /or in crisis.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary care team and function as a nursing resource.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems using therapeutic communication strategies.
  • Ability to work independently to organize and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, including computers.
  • Ability to identify and assess learning needs and develop educational programs.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts, including community agencies, representatives, patients and families.
