The successful candidate will provide high-quality community health relief support and exceptional nursing care to clients residing in the Nunavut Indigenous Communities. The experienced Northern Nurse must adhere to the policies and procedures under the direction of the Government of Nunavut.
Average assignment durations vary from 4 to 6 weeks.
Mental Health Nurse (MHN): MHNs provides holistic and comprehensive mental health nursing care to all Nunavut residents, across the life span. As a multidisciplinary team member, the MHN supports a leadership role within mental health by providing nursing care for patients/families through the administration and implementation of the nursing process - medical/psychiatric assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation with individuals presenting in acute crisis and with chronic illnesses. MHNs collaborate with individuals/families to apply knowledge of general nursing, physical health, and bio- psycho-social well being to formulate a plan of care. MHNs provide organization, direction, supervision and collaboration in the planning and implementation of nursing best practices and therapeutic modalities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Complete a full mental health assessment with formulation of a care plan for all mental health presentations across the life span. Consultation with physicians and psychiatrists as needed.
Provide crisis intervention as well as care planning for chronic illness with the mental health population presentations, including assessment of suicide risks, safety planning, additions treatments, longer term care requirements if needed, etc.
Provide comprehensive nursing care including initial /ongoing assessments, initiation and administration of medications, supporting monitoring of interventions/ including metabolic bloodwork, application and evaluation of therapeutic modalities and consistent application of the recovery model approach with the mental health population.
Application of client/family and community health nursing principles in all aspects of practice, including collaboration with other health centers/hospitals, RCMP, Family Services and Educational Institutions.
Knowledge of Mental Health Act (Nunavut) and ability to practice accordingly when caring for the mental health population.
Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and within a multi disciplinary team, and able to take a leadership role within mental health practice. Participate in medical/nursing/health center rounds by sharing a mental health perspective and advocating for the mental health population.
