The School of Continuing Studies invites applications for the following anticipated courses offered in the 2023-24 academic year.

CSGD-N159: Game Design Studio 1: Introduction to Unity
(Spring: April 25 \xe2\x80\x93 May 30, 2024; Online; Asynchronous)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the art of game design and development using the popular game engine, Unity. Topics include working in 2D and 3D environments, using game objects both sourced externally, and custom made, environmental design with lighting and materials, physics systems, working with and spatializing sound, and setting up cameras and character controllers. Demonstrations, presentations, discussions, and critical play exercises about the fundamentals of the game experience such as rules, play, and culture, support the design process. Students will learn to frame and categorize the elements of their designs through the development of a Game Design Document (GDD), an industry standard tool for production and communication.

For online courses, students are responsible for purchasing their own software. In-person courses are held in OCAD U\'s computer labs using the latest software.

CSGD-N259: Game Design Studio 2: Mechanics and Gameplay
(Spring: June 13 \xe2\x80\x93 July 11, 2024; Online; Asynchronous)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Building on skills gained in Game Design I: Introduction to Unity, this intermediate studio course explores game design and development using the popular game engine, Unity. Students are introduced to programing with C#, with a focus on interactivity and mechanical design. Topics include level design, navigation, implementing animations and programmed movement, input with keyboards and controllers, physics-based interactions using collisions and triggers, game managers, designing goals and failure states, game feel and UI integration. Critical play exercises and play testing with fellow students will provide critical framing for iteration and developmental progression. The combined skill development of the course will lead up to the development of a vertical slice, a playable prototype often used to access funding and publishing. Topics include game story flows, environment and level design, navigation, working with scripts, modifying game assets, optimization, effects, animation, rendering, and game states. Demonstrations and discussions about the game experience such as rules, play, inclusion, and accessibility, support the design process.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A post-secondary degree (Masters preferred), or have comparable professional accomplishments,
  • Expertise in decolonizing, diverse and inclusive processes to hire Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour job candidates in the creative industries,
  • Experience with curriculum development and delivery for adult learners,
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation/written communication skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Course preparation and delivery; participation in Instructor and program meetings.
