The City of Edmonton's Aquatic Experiences & Public Education unit is seeking an energetic and compassionate leader to advance our commitment to reconciliation. If you are a leader with a deep understanding of Indigenous communities and a passion for aquatics, we invite you to join our team as a Facility Programmer.


This position plays a critical role in advancing the City's reconciliation efforts through providing opportunities for Edmonton's Indigenous youth. We prepare youth for potential employment within the City of Edmonton, in addition to providing solid life skills and cultural opportunities.


Be a part of something unique. The Nikaniw Programmer combines the cultural teachings and guidance of Indigenous Elders and Leaders with the instruction of water safety education, first aid, CPR and leadership skills to Indigenous youth. As the Facility Programmer, you will contribute to this goal as you plan, promote, coordinate and supervise all aspects of the Nikaniw Indigenous Youth Leadership Program. You will act as a content expert and relationship builder, fostering integrated approaches with internal teams, Knowledge Keepers, and Elders to ensure our work honors our commitments to the community.

What you will do:



Recruit, hire, train, coach, schedule and evaluate permanent and part time staff responsible for teaching the Nikaniw Indigenous Youth Leadership Program Coordinate staff/participants, and develop schedules for two or more program locations Provide aquatic leadership skills, Indigenous cultural teachings, life skills and pre-employment workshops Develop programming to address identified needs and resource the associated requirements Respond to customer/participant questions, concerns or issues Actively support the youth in achieving personal goals related to socialization, fitness, health and skill development Develop and implement succession plans for the mentoring and ongoing development of program delivery personnel Implement pilots for new and innovative programming to test market interest and assess the level of acceptance Manage the Nikaniw Indigenous Youth Leadership Program budget Respond to emergency situations as needed Cultivate and maintain meaningful relationships with community members, non-profit leaders, and representatives from First Nation and Metis governments to support joint operational planning Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

:Completed 1 year post secondary education in Recreation Administration, Facility Management, Marketing or a related discipline Possession of a current Lifesaving Society Swim & Lifesaving Instructor award Possession of a current Government of Alberta workplace approved Intermediate First Aid & CPR-C award Possession of a current Lifesaving Society Bronze Cross award OR Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard award All certifications must be current and maintained in accordance with the certifying organization's standards 1 year (2080 hours) of experience as an Aquatic Instructor and Lifeguard Lived experience with traditional Indigenous communities, history, culture and current environment. Preference will be given to First Nations, Metis, Inuit or non registered Indigenous persons within the Canadian context. If you are Indigenous, we encourage you to self-identify in your application

Conditions of employment:



Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent) Ability to obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use while on City business Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton Applicants may be tested

Up to 1 permanent, full-time position

Hours of Work:

40 hours per week, Sunday through Thursday. Hours of work may vary; Evening and weekend availability is required (for example Sunday 10am-6pm, Monday/Tuesday 1-9pm, Wednesday/Thursday 11am-7pm)

Salary:

$37.987 - $39.310 (Hourly)
