This position requires a flexible schedule, including early morning, late night, weekend and split shifts. The Coordinator/Shift Supervisor reports directly to the Facility Programmer. The Coordinator/Shift Supervisor is responsible for short-term program and operations supervision, working to enable the safety and enjoyment of those engaged in activities at the facility, assisting in the development, direction and monitoring of the facility's lifeguards and instructors, assisting in the development and delivery of recreation services and programs, and performing lifeguarding, instructional, reception and janitorial tasks related to the operation of the facility. This position includes both Shift Supervising shifts and Lifeguard/Instructor shifts, and has separate wages for the two different roles.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists in the planning, delivery and evaluation of swimming lessons, programs and special events.
Directs and monitors Lifeguards', Instructors', and Recreation staff's job performance. o Assists in evaluating programs and staff.
Assists in coordinating and delivering staff training sessions on lifeguarding, instructing, climbing wall, courts, facility maintenance and workplace safety.
Schedules duties and breaks on the daily schedules.
Covers the Receptionists' breaks at the front desk.
Performs lifeguarding and instruction duties and maintains related records.
Responds to customer inquiries promptly and communicates with the public in a positive and professional manner.
Conducts water tests, and regulates pool chemistry and water temperature.
Performs backwashes of pool filters and cleans hair and lint strainers.
Fills pool chemical storage containers.
Completes inventory and order forms for program and first aid equipment/supplies.
Performs janitorial duties to ensure that safety, hygiene and cleanliness standards and practices are met and related records are maintained.
Provides supervision of the public within the facility, enforcing rules and regulations.
Prepares and submits reports as required.
Attends training sessions and courses as required.
Completes additional tasks as assigned by the Coordinator team.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to train, supervise and manage the facility's Lifeguards, Instructors and Recreation staff, providing feedback in a positive and productive manner.
Ability to plan and teach Swim for Life swimming lessons, Lifesaving programs as well as a variety of recreation program
Knowledge of pool chemistry, filtration, disinfection and heating systems in order to troubleshoot the swimming pools' physical plant, filtration system and the chemical monitoring/delivery systems.
Knowledge of indoor climbing walls, courts, and their associated programs.
Ability to perform water rescues and administer first aid.
Ability to maintain detailed program and first aid records.
Communicates effectively with management, co-workers, and the public.
Working knowledge and understanding of the facility's policies and procedures.
Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of community recreation.
Familiarity with the Health Act, industry recommendations and WHMIS.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
1. Completion of 1+ years as a Lifeguard and swimming instructor
2. Current National Lifeguard (Pool Option)
3. Current Swim for Life Instructor
4. Current Lifesaving Instructor
5. Current Standard First Aid certificate or equivalent (including CPR-C)
Desirable:
1. BCRPA Pool Operators Level I and II (or equivalent)
2. One or more of the following:
a. NLS Instructor
b. Lifesaving Instructor Trainer
c. First Aid and CPR Instructor
d. Aquafit Instructor
3. Belay ticket

Pay: From $29.56 per hour
