YMCA Employment and Community Programs provide a variety of employment, counselling, outreach, intervention, training and newcomer programs to youth and adults throughout the GTA. The Newcomer Youth Leadership Development (NYLD) program will provide newcomers to Canada between the ages of 13-24 with youth-friendly environments where they can meet new friends, develop their leadership skills, and more quickly adapt to Canadian society. The program has a specific focus on settlement and integration issues and community involvement. The program also engages the parents and immediate family members of youth participants through fun, educational and recreational family activities. The goal of this YMCA initiative is to assist newcomer youth and their parents to have a positive settlement experience. The Newcomer Youth Advisor develops and facilitates sessions for newcomer youth that are relevant to their settlement process and which encourages them to become involved in their new community. The position works closely with staff from across the Association and externally in the community and schools to recruit and engage newcomer youth. The position is also responsible for finding meaningful volunteer opportunities for participants, overseeing community service projects initiated by the youth, building relationships with parents of newcomer youth, outreach, promotion, recruitment, program evaluation and reporting. The Advisor must ensure they are proactive in staying abreast of leading trends in youth, teen and young adult development. The position will provide a practical link to all YLD programs to integrate principles of Healthy Adolescent Development, the four strategic frameworks of Harm Reduction, Model of Change, Social Determinants of Health and Abundant Assets into all newcomer youth leadership programs. In this role, you will:

• Develops, implements, monitors and evaluates Newcomer Youth Leadership Development programming. Recruits and retains diverse youth membership of surrounding communities, including managing the process of inquiry to registration to long term participation and retention as a YMCA member.
• Anticipates needs of youth and communities and assists in planning ahead for future programs and leadership opportunities.
• Assists in planning and implementing special NYLD events throughout the year including but not limited to, Peace by Piece, Family Days, Integration Conference, Recognition events, celebrations and trainings;
• Works with NYLD team to plan and deliver family engagement activities.
• Conducts needs assessment within community and builds relationships within the community to promote newcomer youth and parent programs.
• Outreaches to community through presentations and relationship building with other newcomer settlement agencies and works to build referral mechanisms
• Delivers presentations in schools and community to raise awareness of NYLD and reach more newcomer youth.
• Researches, collects and organizes settlement-related information pertaining to youth.
• Prepares monthly narrative reports for submission with the association\xe2\x80\x99s report to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
• Acts as lead contact for Kingston Rd/Main and Danforth region NYLD program.
• Models appropriate behaviours to staff in line with our Mission, Vision and Values; establishes rapport and maintains effective relationship building behaviours with staff and members. Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

You bring:

• University Degree or Community College Diploma in related field or equivalent training/work experience
• Experience working with teens and young adults is a requirement
• Demonstrated knowledge of settlement services and community information resources geared towards newcomer youth
• Superior presentation, facilitation, and organization skills
• Flexibility regarding work hours including evenings and weekends and at different locations
• Ability to communicate in a second language is an asset.
• Proficient with personal computer applications, e.g. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, and Internet search engines; familiarity with social media required
• Experience working with newcomers to Canada an asset
• Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
• Excellent written communication skills and project management skills;
