The Opportunity

The Newcomer Support Worker ensures that newcomer clients of all backgrounds are equipped with the necessary information and support to engage with the community systems in New Brunswick, including but not limited to health care, government programs, and support. This position also ensures that clients with low English skills can access specialized healthcare beyond the scope of what is effectively provided by Tele Care or other government services. Additionally, the incumbent ensures that casual/contracted interpreters and community guides are scheduled to support clients at external appointments. This position works collaboratively with the Settlement Counsellor Team Lead, Youth Support Team, casual interpreters, and volunteers to meet client needs and support the settlement team as needed. The role also involves making follow-up phone calls to clients and translating short written documents from time to time.

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with Newcomer Connections staff to identify and assist clients in need of interpretation assistance in all community contexts, including but not limited to healthcare, government programming, community supports, etc., with the goal of empowering clients as much as possible;
  • Develop and implement tools to assist clients and healthcare providers in accessing Telecare services and other government supports for interpretation and translation;
  • Coordinate health appointments with clients; When required, draw on the support of team members and/or volunteers to help with phone calls and follow-up not requiring an Arabic speaker;
  • Oversee the scheduling of casual and contracted interpreters and volunteers as required;
  • Oversee billing and invoicing for casual interpreters and community partners;
  • Oversee tracking and reporting of all Interpretation Team metrics;
  • Be on call at scheduled times;
  • Assist Newcomer Connections staff with other duties during peak service delivery times;
  • Translate short documents from time to time when no translator is available;
  • Help maintain current client records in CRM, iCare, and other relevant databases;
  • Complete monthly expenses;
  • Attend staff meetings;
  • Assist the settlement team as needed;
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Manager, Newcomer Support Services, and/or GM of Newcomer Connections;
  • Convert concepts in the source language to equivalent concepts in the target language;
  • Relay the style and tone of the original language;
  • Remain neutral and objective in all meetings and interactions
Skills and Qualifications
  • A Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution;
  • This role is English based however any additional language is an asset
  • Heightened sensitivity to the needs of our immigrant community;
  • A minimum of 1-year work experience in a cross-cultural environment;
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated success in building cross-sector relationships
  • Experience as a volunteer
  • Computer literate (MS Office 365, Databases, Outlook)
  • Ability to work flexible hours
