Overview


The City of Kitchener is looking for an action-orientated person who is passionate about the delivery of programs and services that positively impact the wellbeing and mental health of Kitchener residents in underserved neighbourhoods (neighbourhoods that have limited access to programs and services and/or experience barriers in accessing municipal services).


Reporting to the Supervisor of Inclusion Services, you will collaborate with community partners, internal staff and residents to co-design a wide variety of recreation, leisure, and social programs, services and events that support the wellbeing and mental health of underserved residents in identified neighbourhoods. You have experience identifying community assets, gaps and barriers to deliver programs that support neighbourhood level outcomes that positively impact wellbeing and mental health.

Action oriented. Committed to enhancing the delivery of programs, services and events that promote and improve wellbeing and mental health. Interested in making a meaningful impact in underserved neighbourhoods. Knowledgeable about community services, support and agencies and will collaborate with a wide variety of community partners to assist in program coordination and delivery. Experienced in employing anti-oppression, anti-racism, anti-discrimination and decolonization analytical frameworks. Experienced in developing wellness initiatives that focus on the social determinants of health for underserved communities.


This position is temporary until January 31, 2026.

Responsibilities

Plans, develops, and oversees the delivery of a wide variety of programs, services and events that support wellbeing and mental health in underserved neighbourhoods. Engages, collaborates and coordinates with residents, community partners and staff to co-design neighbourhood-based programs. Coordinates the training and support of program instructors. Responsible for the evaluation of programs and activities, and the collection of statistical information. Interviews, selects, trains, recognizes, and supports program volunteers. Serve as a resource to internal staff to improve access to and participation in recreation and leisure programs for equity deserving residents. Manages program budgets efficiently. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

2-year Diploma in Recreation and Leisure, Social Work or Equity Studies, or another related field. 2-4 years of direct experience in: + Development, implementation and evaluation of recreation, leisure and social programs, services, and events for/with underserved populations
+ Staff coordination experiences (training, coaching, recognition)
+ Community/public participation and consultation
Excellent interpersonal, relationship management and facilitation skills that foster the development of relationships both within and outside of the Corporation. Knowledge of wellbeing and mental health programs for vulnerable populations. Experience and knowledge working with equity deserving communities and other diverse community groups. Demonstrated knowledge in and understanding of equity, anti-racism, anti-Black racism, anti-oppression, anti-colonialism, Indigenization frameworks and the impact of discrimination on equity-deserving communities. Proven ability to effectively work independently with minimum supervision, prioritize multiple tasks and meet assigned deadlines. Experience working with wellness initiatives with a focus on mental health and social determinants of health. Excellent organization, customer service, and planning skills. Ability to be an innovative and flexible thinker that understands and can respond to community trends and needs. Must have excellent communication and public relations skills. Excellent conflict resolution and mediation skills and demonstrated experience problem solving. Program research, development, implementation, and evaluation skills. Working knowledge of risk management practices, policies and procedures for recreation and leisure programs. Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Record Check at your own expense as a condition of employment. Must have access to reliable transportation. Ability to take directions and work cooperatively in a team environment with staff, community partners, volunteers and the public. Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
