  • Drives a truck or automobile to and from the work site.
  • Oversees the maintenance of trail related equipment, informs the supervisor in a timely manner, adhering to all safety policies, of equipment needs due to safety or other conditions.
  • Maintains trails by cutting and trimming shrubs and grass using hand or powered tools, including chainsaw, powered brush cutter, or power mower, tractor, or chipper.
  • Cuts and removes wind-thrown trees, from the Natural Area and within the Historic Core.
  • Improves trails by relocating, grubbing, ditching, draining, and other methods.
  • Removes litter and debris from trails and beaches.
  • Clears vistas by removing trees and brush.
  • Constructs barricades from logs, branches, and wind-throw.
  • Constructs small foot bridges, using either lumber or materials manufactured on site.
  • Constructs and repairs stone steps.
  • Ability and willingness to lead volunteer crews, experience preferred.
  • Ability and experience engaging the public in a courteous and professional manner.
Other Duties: Perform other duties within the Natural Area and Park Grounds as required by management.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Safe and professional work practices are expected at all times.
  • A high degree of self-initiative and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision or as part of a team.
  • A valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and a good driving record are required.
  • Candidates with previous chainsaw experience and certification may be given preference.
  • Additional training related to tree felling and tree climbing for limb removal is an asset.
  • Ability to direct volunteers or contract staff on trail and Natural Area maintenance tasks.
  • Candidates with additional experience, applicable training or skills will be given extra consideration.
Experience and familiarity with the skills and trades required for trail construction is required; including: Carpentry
  • Preferred candidates will have the ability to measure, cut, construct, install and repair a wide variety of trail related structures. This includes trail bridges, accessibility ramps, bog walks, deck platforms, benches, log checks, log cribs/steps, kiosks, trail signs.
  • The Steward has the knowledge of the necessary tools required and how to properly use them to safely construct the above mentioned trail related structures.
Masonry
  • The Steward should have a minimum of basic knowledge and understanding of the techniques and procedures involved in dry stone masonry for the construction of retaining walls, culverts, walkways, bridge abutments, stepping stones, riprap tread, causeways, and stone staircases.
  • The preferred candidate is familiar with a variety of stone shaping and cutting tools including: rock drills, feather and wedges, stone chisels, rifting hammers, tracers and points.
Rigging
  • Preference will be given to candidates that possess a working knowledge of high line rigging systems.
Including the safe set up and operation of systems composed of pulleys, blocks, slings, and chains to move heavy materials across various types of terrain, while minimizing the environmental impact.
  • Training and experience with aerial rigging for limb removal, and associated climbing training would be an asset.
Physical Effort/ Working Conditions
  • This position requires very strenuous effort for extended periods of time in difficult terrain occasionally under inclement weather conditions.
  • Stewards must be able to hike 3-5 miles a day with a day pack while carrying tools.
  • Stewards must be able to routinely lift and carry items over 50lbs. and occasionally up to 100lbs.
Education and Experience
  • A minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent experience is required. Further education in related disciplines, (ecology, botany, environmental sciences, and construction), will be given further consideration.
  • The Steward should possess a solid understanding of the fundamentals of trail maintenance and construction.
  • Preferably three years minimum or journeyman\xe2\x80\x99s level of experience performing standard trail related tasks using a wide variety of hand tools, power tools and equipment standard to this field of work.
  • Read and follow blueprints and general construction diagrams.
  • Read and follow maps, whether paper or digital.
  • Chainsaw certified or willing to be trained in order to gain certification.
Professional Development and Training The Steward must be willing to participate in RCIP hosted on and off-site training. First Aid, CPR, AED, and safety training may be required. PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • The Steward should possess a solid understanding of the fundamentals of trail maintenance and construction.
  • Preferably three years minimum or journeyman\xe2\x80\x99s level of experience performing standard trail related tasks using a wide variety of hand tools, power tools and equipment standard to this field of work.
  • Read and follow blueprints and general construction diagrams.
  • Read and follow maps, whether paper or digital.
  • Chainsaw certified or willing to be trained in order to gain certification.
  • Previous experience in a National, State or Provincial Park, or Land Trust/Conservation setting is desirable.
