The primary focus of this position is to teach Mandarin Chinese at a range of levels, from beginner language acquisition (Language B) to language and literature courses for native-level speakers (Language A), using the framework and philosophy of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP).

Duties and Responsibilities

Including but not limited to the following:

  • Teach MYP Mandarin Chinese (A and B) in Grades 6-10
  • Design, prepare and deliver learning activities that have clear objectives and that facilitate authentic, communicative language use
  • Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources and methods, and bring elements of Chinese culture into the classroom
  • Serve as a homeroom advisor for a mixed-grade group of Middle School students
All Mulgrave teachers are expected to:
  • Develop a classroom environment that builds positive relationships and fosters an ethic of care
  • Identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs
  • Use relevant technology to enhance instruction and learning
  • Design and implement a range of authentic formative and summative assessments, providing appropriate and timely feedback to students
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress for the purposes of teaching, learning and reporting
  • Contribute to the co-curricular life of the school
  • Participate in faculty and parent meetings and special events
  • Model respectful and timely communication with students, colleagues and parents
  • Attend professional development workshops as required by the school
  • Endorse the school's mission and values
Qualifications:

Candidates will be expected to:
  • Have Canadian residency and be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Hold or be prepared to attain an age-appropriate First Aid Certificate
  • Be a native Mandarin speaker with the appropriate background and preparation for teaching the language at a range of levels
  • Have a minimum of two years post-qualification experience teaching Chinese in a school setting
  • Hold a BC teacher certification
Preferred Experience/Qualities:
  • Knowledge and understanding of the International Baccalaureate programmes, preferably with experience teaching Mandarin Chinese in the MYP
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English
  • Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience teaching in a technology-rich environment
