The Museum & Retail Assistant is a part-time position of up to 20 hours a week that works with the Customer Experience Coordinator to deliver visitor experiences . This role is a perfect opportunity for an individual with an interest in the history of Alberta and Canada; museums and heritage; or the arts and culture sector who wants to gain wide-ranging experience working at a non-profit. The Assistant will have the opportunity to gain experience in several areas, including Historic Site interpretation; Special Events, Retail sales, Museum Exhibition preparation and care, and ceramic art basics.

Medicine Hat is located along the South Saskatchewan River in southeast Alberta. It is approximately 169 km (105 mi) east of Lethbridge and 295 km (183 mi) southeast of Calgary. This city and the adjacent Town of Redcliff to the northwest are within Cypress County. Medicine Hat had a population 65,441 in 2019.
Necessary Training and Experience:
The Museum & Retail Assistant must be professional and reliable, with previous customer service and cash-handling experience. They should have proven ability to deal effectively and tactfully with the public, along with strong communication skills--both written and verbal. Basic computer skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are required, as is the ability to problem-solve and troubleshoot when needed. The role may involve heavy lifting and long periods of standing. First Aid certification is considered an asset but is not required.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The Museum & Retail Assistant will be the first point of contact for all site visitors and will assist the Customer Experience Coordinator during the off- season by:
Welcoming all visitors to the heritage site in a friendly manner, answering their queries, and/or directing them to the appropriate department/staff member.
Assisting with processing in-person, telephone and online sales, including museum admissions, gift shop sales, program registrations, and invoice payments.
Learning the history of the Medalta Potteries site, the Historic Clay District, Medicine Hat, and Canadian ceramics to deliver an excellent visitor experience.
Delivering engaging public tours of the Medalta site to a wide variety of audiences and group sizes.
Collaborating with other departments, such as Production, Maintenance, Education, and Events, as needed to ensure smooth daily operations of the site.
Assisting with facilitating special events under the direction of the Customer Experience Coordinator.
Other tasks as required, which may involve cleaning gift shop, museum, washrooms, and other public areas.

Pay: $16.50 per hour
Expected hours: 15 - 20 per week
