Yukon News, one of Canada's most decorated community newspapers, is seeking an experienced and visionary
Multimedia Editor
to lead our newsroom.
Reporting to the Publisher, you will be the editorial voice of our organization. You will oversee the entire news cycle--from assigning stories and guiding reporters to laying out the print edition and driving our digital growth strategy. We are looking for a leader who can mentor talent, manage budgets, and ensure our coverage remains dominant in the North.
Key Responsibilities
1. Editorial Strategy & Content Management
Newsroom Direction:
Assign daily news stories, features, and photography, ensuring a balanced mix of hard news and community engagement.
Quality Control:
Review and approve all copy prior to publication. Edit for structure, flow, and adherence to
Canadian Press style
, ensuring all facts and data are verified.
Production:
Plan and execute the layout of the newspaper, allocating space for stories and art based on news value and visual impact.
Competitive Edge:
Monitor competitor coverage to ensure Yukon Newsremains the market leader in breaking news and exclusive features.
2. Audience Growth & Digital Engagement
Strategic Planning:
Develop and execute 90-day, 6-month, and 12-month strategies to grow audience reach and engagement.
Analytics:
Monitor and report monthly on key performance indicators (Page Views, Unique Visitors) and adjust content strategies to maximize online traffic.
Social & Multimedia:
Ensure a "digital-first" workflow where stories, photos, and video are uploaded immediately to the web and social platforms.
3. Leadership & Operations
Team Management:
Recruit, mentor, and manage editorial staff. Conduct performance reviews and hold regular meetings to resolve issues and set objectives.
Budgeting:
Establish and manage the newsroom budget, controlling expenses without compromising editorial quality.
Community Presence:
Represent Yukon Newsat community and networking events, building partnerships and maintaining a strong public profile.
Qualifications
Proven experience in a senior editorial or newsroom management role.
Strong proficiency in page layout software (InDesign) and content management systems.
Demonstrated ability to grow digital audiences and analyze web traffic data.
Experience managing staff, budgets, and tight deadlines.
