About The Role



Reporting directly to the Associate Vice-President, National Lender Desk the underwriter will be responsible for underwriting, processing mortgage applications from brokers. This role will be accountable for building solid relationships with referral sources, to ensure volume, asset quality and profitability targets are met. To ensure full national coverage, this position operates on Pacific Time hours (8.30AM-5PM PT), aligning our Western Canada broker Network.

Key Responsibilities



Review mortgage applications and supporting documents to ensure accuracy and compliance with lender and insurer (CMHC, Sagen, CG) requirements. Analyze credit bureau reports and financial information to assess client eligibility and identify any inconsistencies Structure and present mortgage deals that align with lender policies and broker needs. Communicate proactively with brokers to obtain missing information and make timely, well-documented decisions. Provide brokers with options and recommendations to help them make informed decisions for their clients. Maintain department Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for response times, document reviews, and file updates. Respond to broker inquiries via phone or email promptly and professionally. Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and lenders to increase volume, efficiency, and closing ratios.

Requirements



Demonstrated expertise in the mortgage lending process, including comprehensive knowledge of all related legal documentation. In-depth understanding of residential mortgage projects, available financing alternatives, and a strong focus on delivering client-centered solutions. Proven ability to adapt to diverse and evolving demands, assess complex situations, and formulate effective, results-driven solutions. Solid grasp of regulatory compliance requirements, with a commitment to maintaining up-to-date knowledge and ensuring full adherence to current standards and policies. Exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to identify and mitigate risks, detect anomalies, and capitalize on opportunities for continuous improvement. Ability to operate effectively within a fast-paced and dynamic environment, while maintaining a consistent focus on productivity, quality, and organizational objectives.

Must-Haves



At least four (4) years of relevant experience in the mortgage financing industry. Valid provincial mortgage license. Strong ability to negotiate effectively with intermediaries. Ability to interpret financial statements and assess financial viability. Excellent knowledge of mortgage products, standards, and the loan approval process. Exceptional communication and writing skills in English. Outstanding organizational and time-management skills. Strong customer service orientation. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team. Practical knowledge of web browsers and Outlook. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent interpersonal skills, both written and verbal. Acts with integrity and takes accountability for actions. University degree or college diploma preferred.
