About Our Opportunity

As the division\'s specialist in Engineering and a subject matter expert in Mining Engineering, you will be responsible for advising, consulting, supervising, planning and coordinating all aspects of engineering plans, polices, procedures and programs. You will focus on environmental protection, relating to mining throughout the province and the application of the Environment Act, associated regulations and other legislation administered by the Department.

Primary Accountabilities

Within this role, you can also expect to:

  • Assess applications, reports, design documents, proposals, plans and specifications on projects with environmental implications, in accordance with the appropriate departmental or divisional operating procedures as it relates to mining projects in the Province.
  • Issue or recommend the issuance of approvals as well as manage the approvals and input of terms and conditions into the appropriate department or divisional electronic information management system.
  • Assist other divisions of the Department in the review and assessment of a variety of technical reports including Environmental Assessment reports.
  • Provide technical review and advice to the Department and government agencies on mining related activities including environmental issues, monitoring and mitigations.
  • Participate on inter-departmental committees to provide support and advice regarding mineral development, mine operations, mine reclamation, abandoned mine openings, aboriginal interests and consultation requirements in mineral development projects, and environmental law compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental legislation through the review of data submitted as a requirement of approvals.
  • Coordinate and oversee special projects, as needed.
  • Initiate and prepare technical guidelines, policies and regulations regarding environmental and environmental health issues.
Qualifications and Experience

To be successful within this role, you will hold a Bachelor\'s Degree in Engineering and 6 years related industry (i.e. Mining) experience. You must also be registered (or eligible for registration) with Engineers Nova Scotia as Licensed to Practice.

As the successful candidate you will have extensive and current industry experience in metal mining engineering, mineral processing, and designing of mine workings which includes tailings management facilities, open pit mine, underground shaft, processing facilities.

You will have in-depth knowledge and experience in the design, construction, performance analysis and operations of dams, as well as knowledge of reclamation practices related to mine site rehabilitation. A solid understanding of mineral, reserves and resources evaluation will also be required.

In addition to the above technical aspects, the following will also be essential to this role:
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) skills
  • The ability to lead and engage work teams
  • Experience in project management
  • Sound judgment when dealing with people and ambiguous situations
The following will be considered assets:
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with the Canadian Dam Safety Guidelines and the Mining Association of Canada document entitled \xe2\x80\x9cDevelopment of an Operations, Maintenance and Surveillance Manual for Tailings and Water Management Facilities\xe2\x80\x9d.
  • Mining Certification of Canada, in good standing
  • Knowledge of departmental legislation, regulations, standards; as well as demonstrated ability to interpret regulations, policies and analytical reports
  • Proficiency with standard Microsoft office software, computer modelling skills including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and computer aided drafting (CAD)

Pay Grade: PR 18

Salary Range: $3,215.50 - $3,781.51 Bi-Weekly
