Workplace Safety and Health Branch enforces The Workplace Safety and Health Act and its associated regulations in order to protect the safety and health of workers in Manitoba. Workplace Safety and Health's inspection and investigation activity focuses on improving legislative compliance in order to eliminate workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses.


Conditions of Employment:


Must be legally entitled to work in Canada Valid Manitoba Class 5F driver's licence and be able to operate a Government-owned/leased vehicle Ability to travel throughout the Province and stay overnight as required to carry-out responsibilities of the position Ability to engage in prolonged walking, standing and sitting, as well navigating uneven terrain, with occasional ladder or stair climbing, crawling, bending, and kneeling Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including outside Ability to work on-call and outside regular working hours

Qualifications:


Essential:




Extensive underground mining experience Knowledge and experience using specialized terminology, processes, equipment and procedures related to the mining industry Sound analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and record relevant information/evidence, analyze facts and determine options to resolve situation Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with representatives from other government departments, assist in legal proceedings when necessary and manage conflict professionally Strong written communication skills with the ability to convey information a clear and concise manner Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to prioritize work and work under pressure to meet time sensitive deadlines Ability to work independently, exercising sound reason, judgement and discretion Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Outlook, or similar software applications

Knowledge of health and safety legislation is an asset

Duties:


The Mines Inspector conducts inspections and investigations in underground and surface mines, as well as other industries within an assigned area. This includes responding to workplace fatalities and serious incidents, work refusals, complaints and allegations of reprisal, as well as proactive inspections. The position completes assignments in accordance with The Workplace Safety and Health Act, the Workplace Safety and Health Regulation, the Operation of Mines Regulation and operational procedures set by the Branch. The Inspector's work involves conducting inspections and interviews; preparing written reports on enforcement activities; issuing and determining compliance with orders issued; and providing information to improve awareness of and compliance with safety and health legislation. The position reviews the use of diesel equipment underground, air quality and ventilation requirements, installation and maintenance of equipment; inspects shafts, escape ways, mine rescue, fire protection systems and tailings management areas; and tests mine hoist operators. The position may be called upon to give evidence at an inquest related to an incident or fatality or provide evidence before the Manitoba Labour Board.
