Job Summary
The Team:
The Health and Safety Specialists Unit (HSSU), in the newly formed Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals, is a close-knit, multidisciplinary team committed to ensuring the health and safety of mine workers in BC. With a diverse range of expertise, including ergonomics, mechanical and electrical safety, occupational health, and more, the team works collaboratively to verify and promote compliance with the Health, Safety, and Reclamation Code for Mines in BC. They play a vital role in preventing workplace illness and injury, making sure that mine workers return home safely after each shift, all while fostering a supportive and respectful work environment.
The Role:
As the Inspector of Mines - Mechanical, you will work closely with the senior mechanical inspector to support the mechanical team's goals, focusing on ensuring mines comply with the health and safety regulations related to mechanical safety. Your primary responsibilities will include conducting inspections to verify compliance, supporting regulatory development, and reviewing variance requests. This position offers a unique opportunity to apply your mechanical expertise in a variety of areas, from inspections to examining new technologies and mine development plans, all while playing a key role in protecting the health and safety of workers in BC's vital mining industry.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:
• Registered (or immediately eligible for registration) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC). Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to EGBC within six (6) months of employment. Applicants currently registered with EGBC with in-training status (or able to transfer their current in-training membership to EGBC within six (6) months of employment) may be considered for this position at the Licensed Science Officer 1B level. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
• Bachelor's Degree or higher in a related discipline such as mechanical engineering with an emphasis on heavy material handing systems, mobile equipment, and fixed processing equipment; PLUS, a minimum of two (2) years of related experience in heavy industry or regulating heavy industry; OR,
• Certified mechanic or certified millwright with emphasis on heavy material handling systems, mobile equipment, and fixed processing equipment or Diploma in a related discipline such as mechanical engineering, with emphasis on heavy material handling systems, mobile equipment, and fixed processing equipment; PLUS, a minimum of five (5) years of related experience in heavy industry or regulating heavy industry; OR,
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:
• Ten (10) years of related experience.
• Experience with mining activities such as exploration, aggregate mining, surface mining, mine construction, mine operations and/or processing methods.
• Experience with underground mining.
• Experience in investigations.
• Education in mine engineering.
• Experience regulating health and safety, permitting and/or the environment.
• Experience with joint occupational health and safety committees or as a safety representative.
• Experience in mine rescue.
Provisos:
• Must have a valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent.
• Must be available to travel by air, fixed wing, helicopter and overnight on short notice. Must be able to climb ladders, walk up and down steep ramps.
• Must be able to work in underground conditions using appropriate protective equipment and in environments where exposure to chemical vapours, noise, dust, heat and cold are present.
• May be required to occasionally work evenings and weekends and be exposed to incident scenes involving serious injuries and fatalities.
• Must be wiling to testify at hearings and trials.

This position can be based in any of the following locations: Kamloops, Prince George, Smithers, or Vancouver.
Depending on the successful candidate's location, a bi-weekly isolation allowance may apply.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in Cranbrook, Kamloops, Prince George, Smithers, Vancouver and Victoria.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to four (4) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
