Manager, Human Resources

18 Month Contract

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Regional Director, Human Resources, this position is responsible for the overall management of the Human Resources function at the site level. The purpose of the Human Resources team is to create and add value as a Business Partner in support of operational excellence and contribute to the achievement of the site & corporate strategic objectives and tactics. The Manager, Human Resources is responsible for providing guidance, direction, support and leadership on matters related to Human Resources Policy & Procedure, and best practice, including but not limited to Recruitment & Selection, Performance Management, Workforce Planning, Health & Safety, Compensation Management, Employee Relations, Organizational Development & Training. While being strategic partners to external and internal clientele, the Manager, Human Resources ensures adherence to all policies and procedures, motivates and leads by example and provides learning opportunities while establishing a safe, efficient and welcoming work environment for all team members.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provides leadership, direction and mentoring to the HR team while providing continuous coaching for success to achieve high performance.
  • Develops and cultivates strong working relationships with all stakeholders: guests, ownership, employees and community. Plays an active and integral role supporting all aspects of a location\'s operations to create great experiences and memories for our guests (both internal and external). Liaises and communicates effectively with all departments.
  • Provides direction and support to the senior management team, as well as managers/supervisors and employees by providing guidance and advice on conflict resolution, performance management, career development and succession planning. Actively participates in the recruitment and selection process and guides management recommendations for new hires and terminations.
  • Conducts as well as assists in confidential workplace investigations.
  • Manages and facilitates effective employee communication and feedback through such avenues as meetings, suggestion programs, engagement surveys, training and development activities, newsletters and one-on-one meetings.
  • Implements corporate HR initiatives and strategic plans as directed; ensures that the location\'s HR practices align with corporate programs and objectives.
  • Champion of workplace health, safety and wellness with a focus on employee education & training, workplace inspections and accident prevention not reaction.
  • Anticipates operational and service issues before they escalate, trouble-shoots and resolves guest concerns before they are complaints.
  • Establishes a welcoming and respectful work environment for all employees through the effective management of OH&S, including the Joint Safety Committee, full cycle recruitment, new employee orientation/onboarding, employee engagement activities, performance management, skills training, reward & recognition, etc.
  • Participates in the development of policy that is employee-related or impacts employment relationships at the location level.
  • Identifies internal and external employment issues and trends; recommends improvements, efficiencies and training opportunities; assists with training implementations and deliveries (including facilitation); supports and assists change management activities among departments.
  • Provide advice and direction to management including collective agreement administration and interpretation, maintaining effective labour /management relations, dispute resolution including grievance and arbitration processes, preparation for and participation in collective bargaining, contingency planning.
  • Protects the interests of employees and the company in accordance with corporate policies and laws and regulations. Ensures legal and statutory compliance with all regulatory bodies, including but not limited to the governing Employment/Labour Standards Act, Human Rights Act, and applicable Occupational Health & Safety laws, etc. Receives and addresses legal requests for employee information received from third parties.
  • Accountable for ensuring regular interval reporting is completed on mandatory training requirements for staff at site level.
  • Coordinates and monitors the HR budget including human resources expenses and services, employee recognition, legal, Health & Safety and administration, etc.
  • Measures results of HR programs and initiatives including retention, engagement; analysis and reporting on key HR metrics.
  • Participates in various operational, management and staff meetings and attends other meetings and seminars as required.
  • Manages payroll, benefits, and compensation administration, disability management, and similar programs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed.
Education and Qualifications
  • People-focused and committed to service excellence.
  • Proactive and solution-oriented with a drive to succeed.
  • University Degree, Post-Secondary Education (specialization in Human Resources Management); and suitable combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 3 years of HR management experience
  • CHRL designation an asset
  • Ability to exceed internal and external customer expectations through leading by example and by providing timely, effective and service oriented communication (written/verbal) and support.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and maintain confidentiality; mediation and conflict management/resolution experience is preferred
  • Computer literacy in all applications of MS Office and HRIS experience required (Oracle preferred); payroll processing experience an asset; time and attendance software experience an asset
  • Previous labour relations experience preferred
  • Active affiliation with appropriate Human Resources networks and organizations and ongoing community involvement, preferred.
  • A track record of diligence and responsibility, and aspiration to achieve
  • Ability to obtain registration as a Category 1 Gaming Assistant with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
  • Requirement to work in office, at Shorelines Casino Peterborough.
Work Environment Considerations
  • Regular office and casino environment, non-traditional work hours may be required in certain circumstances, some travel may be required.
