ATCO Electric has been energizing homes, farms, and businesses across north and east-central Alberta for more than 85 years. We serve nearly 229,000 customers in 242 communities and our service area covers nearly two-thirds of Alberta. We are seeking a Metering Engineer to join our Metering and Telecom Engineering team to support this transition and help drive innovation in our metering department. The successful candidate will support ATCO\'s Grid Modernization program, various IT upgrade projects, and a variety of Transmission and Distribution projects.

Reporting to the Supervising Engineer, Metering & Telecom Engineering, the overall responsibility of the Meter Engineer will be for all meter engineering aspects of ATCO Electric revenue metering. This position includes ensuring the standards, practices and processes used in metering are safe, meet all legislative requirements and ensure accurate meter measurements. This position will have the opportunity to work and support departments such as Transmission and Distribution design, customer care, field operations, and external regulatory organizations such as Measurement Canada.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing and maintaining Metering Standards Manual, Metering Specifications, and Customer Metering and Service guide.
  • Direct involvement with transmission and distribution projects in revenue metering. This would include delivering metering requirements, solutions, configuration, sizing, and drawings.
  • Liaise with Measurement Canada, the AUC, Electricity Canada and the AESO on metering issues and regulatory requirements.
  • Promptly and accurately report and escalate all safety incidents and near-misses.
  • Ensure that Measurement Point Definition Records (MPDRs) from the AESO and Single Line Protection and Metering Diagrams are always synchronized.
  • Support the setup of Metering Points, meter data calculations and resolving metering issues.
  • Work with the Meter Shop to perform technical evaluations on new meter types and associated equipment and determine eligibility for approval as an acceptable standard equipment.
  • Gather information from technologists, customers and team leads regarding enhancements to the existing and creation of standards and specifications.
  • Monitor and evaluate changes in legislative and other applicable standards and requirements and evaluate how they affect current metering practices.
  • Participate in the development of IT projects and evaluate the metering training program.
  • Participate in developing Comprehensive Measurement and Settlement Review processes.
  • Operate meter IT systems such as Maximo meter asset, GIS, and Customer Cloud Service.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of an Electrical Engineering degree and registered, or eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer in Alberta with APEGA.
  • Minimum four (4) years of professional Engineering experience in the utility industry.
  • Knowledge of electricity meter and measurement.
  • Good drafting skills would be an asset.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills with the ability to present findings clearly and professionally, both verbally and in written reports.
  • Exceptional work ethics, with the ability to work independently, see competing priorities through to completion, on time, and with a high level of quality.
  • Working knowledge of the requirements of revenue metering and metering quality assurance program would be an asset.
  • Team player willing to help in all other aspects of work, including those outside of core responsibility.
  • Position based out of downtown Edmonton.
