Job Description

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg has been providing mentoring to Winnipeg's youth for 55 years. As we diversify and grow, develop innovative programs, and serve more youth in Winnipeg through creative collaborations, we are looking for a full-time Mentoring Specialist to complete all aspects of program delivery.

This position will work within a variety of our youth-mentoring programs and the applicant must have the keen ability to interact joyfully with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds. An interest in social service work that is anti-oppressive and strength-based. The ability to see people in context and see issues from multiple perspectives is crucial. Applicants should be comfortable interacting with people over the telephone, in-home, at school, and through email/text, and be able to multitask and stay well-organized.

Attention to detail is absolutely required. An extensive knowledge of youth development, and an understanding of the crucial impact of healthy relationships between caring adults and youth.

Experience interviewing adults and children, assessing, coaching established matches, training mentors, supervising group programming, and supporting families are required. Experience in case noting and case management through Microsoft Dynamics and use of Outlook, Sharepoint, TEAMS required. Communication (oral and written) skills are an absolute must. A love of writing is definitely helpful, as is a joyful approach to dialogue. Curiosity is critical.

As required by our National Standards, candidate is required to have a 2-year degree or diploma in an area related to human services/social work (or be in the process of completing their last year of a relevant degree program), Sociology, Psychology, Human Ecology, Social Work, and Conflict Resolution degrees are particularly relevant. However, candidates with many years of relevant experience may be considered equivalent, and candidates who excel in supporting youth relationships are encouraged to apply regardless of educational background.

You must be a quick learner, adaptable, and very comfortable with computers; able to type quickly and accurately.

You

MUST

be able to work a varied schedule of 35 hours each week, completed mainly afternoons and evenings until 8 pm and 1-2 weekend shifts a month in order to accommodate family and volunteer schedules. Schedules are flexible and staff can occasionally work from home upon request. You must have a smartphone and a valid driver's license.
