International Student Services is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated UWinnipeg students to assist new students with their transition to university life as a UWinnipeg Student Mentor!
Representative Duties:
'Matched' with 2-8 first year students (either Domestic, International, Refugee, Adult Learner, New Canadian or Immigrant students) to assist in their transition to university life and to the City of Winnipeg during the 2025-2026 school year.
Provide new students support during their transition to life in Winnipeg: i.e. includes helping student with setting up banking, communication methods, transportation modes and appointments with health professionals, etc.
Provide new students with information about The University and university life including, but not limited to: purchasing textbooks, locating classrooms, accessing information from the library, using the Centre for Academic Writing, counselling services and academic and career advising, etc.
Provide social supports and assistance with cultural transition for new students by organizing activities which engage them in the wider student body, community, and city.
Conduct campus tours at the International Welcome Day (IWD).
Participate in ISS in-person or virtual events, including IWD at the beginning of each academic term.
Respect the privacy and confidentiality of the mentee(s).
Assisting with ISS office duties and programming as required.
Other duties as assigned.
Time commitment varies depending on the time of year. However, mentors are expected to contact their mentees once per week during the first two months of classes and twice per month thereafter. In addition to contacting with mentees, mentors are required to attend:
+ A Mandatory Training Session on August 28, 2025
+ Mentor group meetings usually 1 hour in length
+ Minimum two in-person ISS events per term.
Qualifications:
A current student or a recent graduate of the University of Winnipeg.
Must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
Experience with 'transitional issues' (leaving home, urban experience, separation from family supports, post-secondary expectations) considered an asset.
Ability to listen and recognize opportunities, as well as challenges.
Accept different points of view and be respectful of others.
Be a positive role model.
Person who assists students to focus on goals and provides encouragement.
Knowledge of global cultures and traditions is considered an asset.
Valid International or Manitoba Driver's License is considered an asset.
Ability to work September 2025 to August 2026.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
