Summary of responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager of Addiction Services, Adult Mental Health and Residential Services the Mental Health Counsellor (MHC) works collaboratively with individuals experiencing mental health issues and concurrent disorders that affect their functioning in some areas such as at home, school/work, and/or in the community. The MHC is responsible for providing stabilization, support, intensive case management, and individual and group counselling. The MHC will primarily be assigned to work with the Safe Beds program and work closely and collaboratively with other care providers to support clients to achieve their treatment goals.
Requirements of the job
2 year College Diploma in human studies
Minimum 2 years' experience in mental health and concurrent disorders counselling
Minimum 1 years' experience in group facilitation
Experience working with clients and families experiencing mental health and concurrent disorders
Experience in utilizing a variety of counselling and psychotherapeutic tools, both individually and in group format, including prescriptive programs, problem solving, emotional regulation, techniques for coping with anxiety and stress, social skill development, milieu therapy, fostering life skills, crisis intervention, and coping with acute situations
Experience in establishing a therapeutic relationship with clients to improve health outcomes and wellbeing
Demonstrated assessment, treatment planning, and discharge planning skills
Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with professionals and community partners
Ability to work independently
Strong written and oral communication skills
Good computer skills
Certified in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention- Abridged
Ability to be organized and autonomous, and have good team-work capabilities
Demonstrated regular, punctual attendance
Valid drivers' license in good standing and access to a vehicle
Training in Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention
Functional proficiency in both official languages (oral and written in English; oral in French - and testing completed)
First Aid/CPR certified
