Summary of the Position:

Novavax is seeking a Medical Science Liaison/Senior Medical Science Liaison who will report to the Canadian Head of Medical Affairs. This position will encompass the Coronavirus and Influenza vaccines programs and any additional future pre-launch products. The candidate will be primarily responsible for developing the regional scientific engagement strategy and communicating with key external stakeholders in their designated region as a subject matter expert on Novavax's vaccines programs.

The candidate must have excellent communication, relationship-building, and collaborative skills. The position will be remote-based covering the Western Canada region (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan) with an expectation of intermittent travel to the US corporate headquarters (in addition to other travel requirements).

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Field-based scientific expert responsible for building and maintaining appropriate high-level relationships with external advisors, organizations, payers, institutions and thought leaders. Serves as the non-promotional scientific conduit between Novavax and the relevant healthcare community across product range. Provides high-quality scientific expertise relating to our vaccines. Facilitates data generation, education, and scientific insights-gathering activities at the direction of Medical Affairs leadership. Responds to unsolicited medical information requests from health care providers and supports commercial colleagues through internal scientific training and external customer scientific interactions.

  • Serve as a vaccine subject matter expert to various external stakeholders across multiple settings
  • Identify, establish, and maintain scientific relationships with thought leaders, professional groups, organizations, decision-makers, and other key stakeholders in the assigned geography
  • Engage in scientific exchange with identified key stakeholders to provide balanced scientific and clinical information
  • Coordinate with Market Access to provide education and presentations to Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committees and Formulary Review Boards
  • Share and discuss evidence-based scientific data with stakeholders in accordance with all relevant regulatory requirements and company guidance
  • Capture and report scientific insights obtained via appropriate scientific interactions with customers and other external sources, including webinars, conferences, guidelines, recommendations, and scientific literature
  • Attend conferences, medical meetings, and webinars, and provide scientific support at medical exhibits and scientific sessions at regional and national medical conferences as needed
  • Respond to unsolicited questions and document these requests and responses appropriately
  • Facilitate education on disease state, product, and competitor products to internal stakeholders and external customers as appropriate
  • Facilitate company-sponsored research initiatives at the direction of Medical Affairs leadership
  • Represent Medical Affairs at scientific meetings and conventions as directed by Medical Affairs leadership
  • Contribute to the development of scientific materials for the Medical Affairs field team
  • Work with Medical Affairs leadership to develop and execute the field team strategic plan
Minimum Requirements:
  • PharmD, MD, and/or PhD (or equivalent education) in a relevant clinical/scientific discipline
  • 5+ years MSL/field Medical Affairs experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry
  • Therapeutic area expertise in infectious diseases, especially vaccines, strongly preferred
  • Knowledge and experience in public health, epidemiology, and/or outcomes research desirable
  • Ability to network and partner with important external customers, including scientific leaders, investigators, clinical practice leaders and academic affiliated institutions, including treatment guideline members
  • Ability to consolidate and understand complex data sets, summarize and synthesize data, and objectively interpret results
  • Knowledge of national and society vaccination guidelines, clinical research processes, federal and provincial recommendation bodies, Health Canada regulations, PAAB, IMC, and other ethical/compliance guidelines, laws, and regulations relevant to the Canadian pharmaceutical industry and its external stakeholder environment
  • Understanding of health economics, healthcare reimbursement, and the distribution channels relevant to the pharmaceutical/biotechnology organization
  • Self-starter who can work effectively within teams
  • Ability to effectively present scientific information to diverse audiences
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills; fluent in English with excellent written and oral communication skills. English-speaking multilingual candidates desirable
  • Travel commitment 50-70%; residence in Vancouver preferred but not required
