Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, this position is responsible for the management of sample reception, accessioning and preparation (which may include grossing) for diagnostic testing, analysis, interpretation and result reporting of clinical and pathology samples. They can be asked to assist with the training of newly hired Laboratory Technologists (LT), Medical Laboratory Technicians (LA/T), students and residents in the reception, handling and processing of patient specimens. The Laboratory Technologist also identifies and resolves unsuitable specimens for testing, as well as keeps accurate records of all tests and procedures performed. This position needs to be familiar with all processes and complies with the procedures related to those processes. The LT will prepare reports and correspondence as designated and will be required to work shifts and or call back. The incumbent performs only those functions for which training has been completed and competency assessed. Depending on operational requirements may rotate through different specified job functions.

Requirements:
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited training program as a Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent CSMLS prior learning assessment program
Registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists Ontario (CMLTO) is required to be considered as a MLT (Medical Laboratory Technologist) and is preferred
Knowledge, experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic/experience requirements/credentials
Clinical experience in a medical laboratory preferably in a hospital setting with either a minimum 2 years' experience or having completed your clinical placement at within the last five years preferred
Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated evidence of maintaining clinical competence through continuing education and practical skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated competence using statistical analysis
Demonstrated competence in computer applications
Demonstrates excellent knowledge of human anatomy and physiology
Demonstrates knowledge of a quality management system and the Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) requirements

Proven ability to work well independently with a high degree of motivation
