Summary
The Media Specialist II is a key member of UBC Studios' production team, managing production and delivery of multi-media services for a wide range of educational, promotional, and communications projects. As a DOP and video editor, this role blends creative storytelling with technical expertise, from concept development and shooting to post-production and delivery. The Media Specialist II collaborates with faculty, staff, and students across the university, transforms ideas into engaging, high-quality digital media products. Beyond traditional production, the role also leverages emerging technologies, including AI-assisted tools, digital workflows, and the potential of immersive media to streamline processes, enhance collaboration, and push creative boundaries.
This position requires work both in an office environment and on location (on and off campus), and may require working some early mornings, late evenings or weekends, and occasional travel.
Organizational Status
UBC Studios provides a suite of digital media services to the University community including strategic enterprise-wide communication projects, educational, and creative media services. This position reports to the Supervising Producer, UBC Studios and is part of the UBC Studios' video production team that provides production and post-production.
This position also collaborates with management and staff within UBC Studios and from other units of Information Technology and UBC where appropriate.
Work PerformedCreates digital assets for a range of creative media projects including educational, training, and communication projects.
Develops visual stories based on creative briefs, including scripting, storyboarding, shot-list creation, and more, created in collaboration with clients and team members using professional media production and post-production tools.
Performs research on equipment, infrastructure, participates in selection, and oversees the deployment and maintenance of them based on industry standards and best practices.
Participates in both studio and on-location productions.
Works in coordination with Producers, plans production schedules with project partners and consults project stakeholders on best practices in digital media production in both budget funded and cost recovery stakeholder environments.
Takes part in new educational and communication projects, including but not limited to, developing and implementing project plans and schedules, producing pre-visualization assets such as storyboards, animatic, etc.
Participates in planning, coordination and delivery of demos, presentations and media training workshops for UBC community (faculty, students and staff).
Leads small projects and manages their scope and associated budgets when needed.
Maintains UBC Studios workflow and standards; applies and follows industry standard production/post-production methodologies and best practices.
Provides technical guidance to less experienced staff.
Researches and offers recommendations regarding the latest technology solutions and provides input into the best practices for the development of digital media assets.
Serves as the lead cinematographer and ensures the effective operation of studio production equipment--including cameras, drones, lighting, and audio systems--to capture high-quality media assets.
Maintain up to date knowledge of evolving digital media creation techniques, including AI-driven and cloud-based workflows, industry standards, software, and professional equipment.
Manages source files and backups of digital media artifacts with media storage system, local hard drives and network storages.
Explores and integrates AI-assisted production tools (e.g., generative AI for previsualization, transcriptions, editing) and cloud-based workflow platforms (e.g., Frame.io) to improve efficiency and collaboration across production cycles.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The person in this position makes decisions regarding the production and post productions of creative media projects. Disruptions to these projects or improper delivery of assets (over budget, over time, or improperly produced) could have a significant impact on clients' ability to deliver on strategic goals (academic mission, sustainability, operations, etc.).
Errors in judgment, poor planning, or failure to act decisively could have a detrimental effect on the delivery and consumption of digital media resources by clients. This could adversely impact the University community, including the stakeholders involved, which would result in possible lost productivity, funding, and revenue.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the Supervising Producer, UBC Studios. In a matrix organizational structure, the Media Specialist II also reports to a Producer when assigned to a media project within the scope of that specific project. The Media Specialist II is also expected to work with independence and latitude, making decisions within this broader supervision.

Provides functional supervision to student employees and assists in mentoring junior staff.
Minimum QualificationsDiploma in digital media production, film, broadcasting, or a related field.
Minimum of three years of professional experience in professional camera operation and video editing or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated proficiency with industry-related production and post-production tools.
Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own.

Preferred QualificationsHigher Education in Film School or Film Programs is an asset.
Practical and operational knowledge of professional production equipment such as video, audio, lighting, and other studio equipment including RED cameras), cine lenses, gimbals, LED lighting (including DMX board), remote-jib, and more.
Demonstrated intermediate expertise in digital asset production including live-action, editorial, and sound.
An understanding of immersive media technologies such as virtual reality, 360-degree videos, and spatial audio.
Proficiency in specialized video and audio post-production software including Adobe Creative Suite specifically Adobe Premiere.
Pilot Certificate - Advanced Operations (drone).
Intermediate knowledge of key industry-standard production and post-production processes and techniques such as but not limited to production, editing, finishing, quality assurance/control.
Intermediate knowledge of standard office software such as but not limited to Microsoft Office Word/Excel/PowerPoint.
Must be able to take initiative and work under pressure to meet tight timelines.
Experience using generative AI tools (text, image, or video-based) to support storytelling, pre-visualization, and editing workflows.
Familiarity with digital collaboration tools or other project-management/review systems for media workflows.
