We are interested in receiving resumes for a Mechanical Piping Superintendent. This is a site based project term position on a 2 week in 2 week out rotation, with 12 hour long shifts. The site is accessed via air from designated pick-up points in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Mechanical Piping Superintendent will provide the day-to day direction for all contractors for surface construction within their discipline. Ensure best business practices are being implemented and used, ensuring the highest level of service support and safety and environmental procedures are being provided from the various site-based contractors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate construction projects from start to finish while remaining in compliance with safety regulations, project schedule, drawing specifications, quality guidelines and budget.
  • Conduct constructability reviews of engineering drawings and specifications during the initial execution phase.
  • Assist in the construction contract bidder pre-qualification, tendering and contractor selection processes as appropriate.
  • Participate in the development of logistics plans with supply chain department.
  • Report to the project management team, through the surface construction manager.
  • Manage, and provide guidance and technical support to contractors within assigned discipline and area; and or advise, monitor, and supervise work in all phases within assigned area and discipline.
  • Plan and supervise site QA/QC programs including material testing.
  • Assist the contractors with clarification, interpretation, interference resolution and QA/QC related matters.
  • Assist in the management of the site Health and Safety Program.
  • Aggressively maintain a safe working environment and comply with all environmental, health, and safety policies.
  • Proactively work with contractors to ensure project safety and quality objectives are being achieved.
  • Responsible for, or assist the General Superintendent and/or Construction Manager, in the overall planning and scheduling to ensure that the Project is constructed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Accountable for being versed with the design drawings, specifications, and construction contracts.
  • Ensure construction conforms to the drawings and specifications and that consistent construction practices are followed in assigned areas and disciplines.
  • Assume responsibility for productivity of subtrades, efficient use of materials and equipment and contractual performance of the project.
  • Assist the project team with the reviews and estimates for contract extras and monitoring the actual daily costs submitted by the Contractors.
  • Monitor the 3 week look-ahead schedules submitted by the Contractors and reporting deviations and activities not being met by the Contractors to the Construction Manager.
  • Submit daily progress reports to the site construction superintendent outlining contractor achievements, issues, concerns and any other relevant information as required by management.
  • Update site wide deficiency lists to be issued at weekly construction meetings.
  • Actively participate in the completion of documents required for turnover (i.e. ITPs, Check sheets, QVDs, etc) in support of contractor scope completion.
  • Other related duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
  • 8+ years of experience in a Mechanical Piping Superintendent role or related field; trades journeypersons certification is preferred.
  • Extensive background in construction execution management or supervision.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a supervisory role in construction and heavy industrial field.
  • Reasonable level of computer expertise and working knowledge of Microsoft Applications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines or other productivity standards;
  • Reasonable understanding of budget tracking and working within departmental schedules and budgets.
  • Solid knowledge and appreciation for Health, Safety, and Environmental policy and procedures, to ensure work is conducted accordingly in his or her area of responsibility.
  • Be able to evaluate the workforce, direct and mentor the supervisory staff where necessary and coordinate training requirements for employees and contractors.
  • Ability to stand or sit in the same location with some opportunity to move about; occasionally required to stoop or lift light material or equipment.
  • Able to be occasionally exposure to factors such as temperature extremes, moving machinery, noise, and fumes which cause noticeable discomfort.
