About the PositionLethbridge Polytechnic is seeking a dedicated and experienced Mechanical Supervisor/Chief Engineer to oversee the continuous mechanical operations, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical systems across the institution. This role is integral in ensuring a safe, efficient and well maintained environment for students and staff. Responsibilities extend to the main campus, housing, and off-campus facilities, with a focus on maintaining high standards in safety, efficiency, and operational integrity.Position DetailsKey Responsibilities:Supervisory Duties:

  • Lead and manage the Mechanical Maintenance Department, including organizing work schedules, assigning duties and assist the Director with staff performance appraisals.
  • Provide guidance, technical expertise, and training to team members.
  • Manage and coordinate the work of tradespersons and contractors.
Mechanical System Oversight:
  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation of boilers, HVAC systems, plumbing, heating, and building automation controls.
  • Prioritize and scheduling preventive maintenance, safety, and repairs.
  • Respond to and resolve issues in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing systems.
  • Plan and organize work for least possible disruptions, including advanced planning for major projects.
Operational Management:
  • Oversee the purchase and inventory management of maintenance materials and spare parts.
  • Develop and implement operational plans to minimize disruption during maintenance or repairs.
  • Monitor and enhance the performance of mechanical systems through strategic improvements.
  • Act as Chief Engineer for the entire campus.
Compliance and Reporting:
  • Maintain compliance with Alberta safety and regulatory standards, including ABSA codes.
  • Develop emergency response plans for mechanical system failures.
  • Keep detailed maintenance records for audits and compliance.
Strategic Contributions:
  • Collaborate with other departments to align maintenance activities with institutional goals.
  • Participate in budget planning and manage cost-effective operations.
Complexity and Problem-Solving:
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues involving boilers, Building Management Systems (BMS), and electronic/pneumatic controls.
  • Ensure the integrity of boiler water closed systems through testing and monitoring.
  • Innovate by converting outdated controls and systems to modern solutions.
Required Qualifications
  • Either Journeyman plumber or Journeyman electrician
  • Power Engineer Class 5 or better
  • At least 5 years of experience in mechanical operations and supervision, with a strong background in trades, HVAC, and controls
  • Leadership and team management abilities
  • Budget management and strategic planning
  • Proficiency with Windows-based systems and the Microsoft Office suite
  • This role involves hands-on work with mechanical systems, requiring physical activity, attention to safety protocols, and occasional exposure to hazardous conditions. Protective equipment such as hard hats, gloves, and safety glasses will be provided
  • Unrestricted Class 5 driver's license

Salary AUPE Class Level 13 Step 1 $74,054.90 per annum
