Lydium is a specialized consulting engineering firm providing process and chemical engineering expertise to industrial startups and their investors. We integrate tightly with clients' teams from early concept through operating pilot plants. Our firm is led by a small team of driven engineers who are passionate about new technology, specializing in extractive metallurgy, electrochemical systems, membrane systems, techno-economic modeling, and pilot plant design/execution.
About the Role:
We're seeking a versatile mechanical engineer to establish Lydium's mechanical engineering practice. This foundational role supports chemical process technology development from prototype concepts to pilot plant construction, with potential to build and lead a team as our custom equipment design capabilities expand.
What You'll Be Doing:
Blank-page design and stamping for mechanical safety of equipment in first of a kind applications, including: pressure vessels, piping, heat exchangers per applicable codes
Lead mechanical engineering of pilot plants: equipment specification, layout development, mechanical supports
Develop conceptual 3D renderings for pilot, demo, and commercial scale plants as well as equipment drawings, module design, pipe routing, and fabrication specifications
Oversee custom equipment fabrication from design through commissioning
Act as project manager and/or project engineer for various projects with direct contact with clients of different backgrounds.
Maintain, improve and own Lydium's Professional Practice Management Plan, as well as standard project practices
Advise and assist the Techno-economic analysis (TEA) team on an as-needed basis on studies involving custom mechanical equipment and manufacturing-type processes
Support business development and shape mechanical engineering service offerings
What You'll Bring To The Team:
Bachelor's in mechanical engineering
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license in British Columbia (or eligible for transfer)
10+ years in chemical plants, consulting, equipment supply, or chemical/mining companies
Experience in industrial automation and design of manufacturing processes
Experience in fast-paced, resource-constrained startup/pilot plant environments
Strong equipment design and plant layout expertise
Custom equipment fabrication experience and vendor management
Comfort working independently while building new capabilities in house
Excellent organizational skills for multiple simultaneous projects
Ability to travel within Canada and the USA for client meetings and project support as needed (up to 25% travel)
Valid driver's license is considered an asset
Eligible to work in Canada
