The Mechanical Engineer is mainly responsible for developing drawings, completing calculations, and obtaining certification related to vessels, piping, and related systems. The engineer collaborates with and supports the project team as required at various project stages.
The project team includes but not limited to Projects, Engineering, Procurement, Estimating, Drafting, QC and Shop personnel.
Duties and Responsibilities
The role of the Mechanical Engineer encompasses many activities including:
Provide support to Project Engineers/Managers, Drafting, Quality Assurance Department and Shop/Fabrication, ensuring correct development of drawings and calculations related to vessels, piping, skids, supports and related systems.
Prepare and/or review design packages to be submitted to local authorities for the purposes of obtaining a CRN for pressure vessels and pressure piping systems.
Welding procedure development, review, and implementation.
Participate in ABSA and ASME audits, certification, and/or renewals.
Interpret and provide advice regarding customer specifications, applicable laws, rules, and regulations to all stakeholders.
Maintain applicable company specifications and standards.
Keeping current with industry trends, tools and innovations; providing suggestions and/or opportunities for continual improvement of company processes and procedures.
Perform other related work and tasks as required
Direct Reports
The Mechanical Engineer is a motivated member of a team working together in the most efficient manner. The Intermediate Mechanical Engineer directly reports to the Manager, Engineering Manager.
Tools, Systems, Equipment and Machinery
Personal Computer/laptop with Microsoft Office, Estimating software. Various engineering and project-related software programs including AutoCAD, Compress, Caesar II piping stress, Inventor, Pro/Engineer, Microsoft Office, and various sizing programs.
Physical Requirements
Sitting for long periods at a time focused on a computer screen or CAD drawings.
Travel Requirements
Occasional travel within the Province of Alberta.
Working Environment
Works in a controlled office environment. Occasional visits to the fabrication shop which requires appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment).
Communications
Attend internal and/or external meetings. Interacts in a respectful and cooperative manner. Resolves and/or escalates issues in a timely fashion. Understand how to communicate difficult/sensitive information tactfully.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, or equivalent, from an accredited university.
Registration with APEGA is mandatory.
Be eligible for professional registration in other provinces across Canada.
Preferred engineering experience in Oil & Gas industry (preferably gas processing or manufacturing related).
Experience with pumps, piping, vessels, tanks and heat exchangers would be an asset.
Proficient in mechanical equipment selection.
Familiar with Process & Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs), and line schedules, etc.
Familiar with piping stress analysis.
Extensive knowledge with ASME B31.3, BPVC Sec VIII Div 1.
Strong knowledge of ASME / ANSI / API Codes.
In-depth technical knowledge and understanding of discipline key work processes as well as overall project development processes.
Have thorough knowledge of the Canadian gas processing industry and its standards, practices, and requirements.
Knowledge of the gas processing industry in other parts of the world is considered an asset.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,).
Field experience in Oil and Gas facilities is an asset.
