SAF has a permit to practice engineering in Alberta (under APEGA) and permitted in BC (under EGBC). We are licensed under the CSA-B51 quality program and adhere to all relevant regulations and standards, including ASME B16.34 and, ensuring the highest quality and safety in our products.

Position Summary



This opportunity is ideal for a recent mechanical engineering graduate or an early-career professional seeking diverse technical experience. In this role, you will be exposed to a broad range of functions across the organization--including product design, application engineering, sourcing, and supply chain. You'll gain well-rounded experience by working closely with senior engineers, business development teams, and manufacturing personnel. This position combines hands-on engineering analysis with direct customer interaction and involvement in themanufacturing and sourcing process of custom-engineered production equipment. Occasional travel is required for customer visits, meetings, and conferences within Canada and to international locations such as Latin America and Australia.

To foster collaboration between the AB & BC offices of SAF, occasional travel between two offices is expected.

Engineering Function



SAF Engineering consists of four distinct functional groups that collaborate closely to meet both the technical and commercial needs of the organization. These groups include:

The successful candidate will rotate between Group 1 (Applications & Business Development) and Group 2 (Production & Post Sales Support) during their first two years. This rotational approach offers a broad spectrum of training opportunities, allowing the engineer-in-training to gain valuable exposure to both customer-facing technical roles and internal production support functions. The candidate will operate under different reporting structures in each group, supporting their development across various engineering disciplines and workflows within SAF. Part of the rotation will also include working within the Supply Chain department within the capacity of a sourcing engineer.

Key Responsibilities



Assist in the application engineering of custom flow control equipment (e.g., valves). This process involves using in house valve sizing calculations and flow modeling simulations as well as instrumentation review and specification. Support RFQ (Request for Quote) processes and review product specifications. The customer journey for a custom engineered valves involves many touchpoints with the customer to understand and evaluate their needs. This is an SAF tailored process for projects requiring the engineered solutions to solve challenging flow problems. Conduct specification reviews and determine material compatibility using literature and internal documentation. Interpret and apply relevant standards such as ASME B16.34, ASME Section VIII, and ISA valve sizing practices. Build knowledge of fluid mechanics, process piping, and flow equipment design. Use and continuously improve skills in SolidWorks CAD and other relevant software tools. Support manufacturing and drafting services to manufacture production equipment as per customer specifications. Support factory acceptance testing and other project specific technical literature such instructions manuals, engineered lifting solutions to satisfy technical requirements of production equipment. Communicate with suppliers as a representative of Special Alloy Fabricators. Evaluate and understand import/export costs. Model, evaluate and optimize potential supply scenarios. Evaluate global suppliers for technical acceptance and commercial offering. Work closely with external legal counsel to develop contracts and other supply agreements

Experience and Education Qualifications



Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution. Registered or eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) in Alberta. 0-2 years of related engineering experience (co-op and internship experience considered). Previous use of ERP systems or CRM platforms in a technical sales or engineering context considered an asset. Advanced degree such a Masters (MSc or MEng) considered an asset.

Demonstrated self-motivation and a commitment to continuous learning and professional development. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. Effective time management and organizational skills to meet deadlines and support cross-functional teams. Enthusiastic about engaging with clients and internal stakeholders, with an interest in the intersection of engineering and business development.
