Apply today!Whitewater's FRP Manufacturing department is looking for a Mechanical Engineer, Composite to join their team! Reporting to the (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) FRP Manufacturing Lead, you will be an integral member of the team and responsible to support the manufacturing by composite design & analysis of new and existing products and components. The technical support will be provided to functional groups involved with the entire spectrum of the product lifecycle. Daily duties can include information gathering, performing research, conducting experiments, prototyping, consulting, designing, and documenting activities throughout analysis to find timely, efficient, cost-effective solutions to manufacturing challenges that arise. You should be able to produce models, drawings, and bills of materials of designed/drafted components for manufacturing in FRP composite plants.YOUR ROLE

  • Determine design specifications in response to composite component requirements.
  • Directly create and/or modify engineering and product designs in SolidWorks.
  • Review, quality-check, approve, and release engineering deliverables and documents for new and standard products following best engineering and design practices.
  • Design and analyze jigs and fixtures as required for prototyping and manufacturability of new FRP designs.
  • Field visits and detailed evaluations as a part of troubleshoot engineering and design-related issues for FRP products to determine the root cause and provide corrective actions.
  • Review ongoing FRP product performance at various customer sites.
  • Contribute and supervise prototyping and the fabrication procedure of FRP parts.
  • Provide technical support to client and project teams.
  • Create drawings and bills of materials in accordance with industry standards for the purpose of FRP fabrication.
  • Create work instructions and deploy to manufacturing plants in appropriate manner for improved consistency in operations efficiency and product quality.
  • Perform and/or review first article inspections (FAI) for FRP products.
  • Perform and participate in risk assessments (such as hazard analysis and Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis - DFMEA) as necessary.
  • Participate in development of FRP standards, test plans, and improvement processes.
  • Write, publish, and support the execution of Engineering Change Requests (ECR), Engineering Change Orders (ECO), Non-Compliance Reporting (NCR), and Opportunity for Improvement (OFI) procedures.
  • Write and publish technical reports as required.
  • Gather and prepare documents related to local authority reviews and approvals (CSEI, TUV, etc.).
  • Create, implement, and follow procedures to ensure consistency and reliability of processes and deliverables.
  • Maintain and follow best practices in Engineering, Customer Service, Quality, Lean Management, and Safety.
  • Contribute to the development of departmental collaboration and efforts to improve productivity and efficiency.
  • Follow all plant and laboratory specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety practices
YOU BRING
  • Minimum educational requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Manufacturing/Mechanical/Material Engineering (preferably with composites specialization) with 5-8 years of experience (at least 5 years in manufacturing environment).
  • Designation or eligibility to register with APEGBC.
  • Knowledge of FRP design, analysis, fabrication drawing production, laminate schedules, manufacturing, testing/evaluation, and other procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience about FRP composite manufacturing processes such as Hand Layup, Spray Layup, Open Mold (OM), Vacuum Bag, Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) and Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM).
  • Good understanding about the chemical and mechanical properties of conventional polymers such as polyester, vinyl ester, HDPE, PMMA, etc.
  • Good understanding about glass constituent material such as chopped strand mats, continuous filament mat, woven roving, etc.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and PDM systems - experience with other 3D modeling software packages will be considered.
  • Experienced in creation and interpreting of polymer composite drawings
  • Knowledge and experience of material and process qualification considered as asset.
  • Strong problem solving, technical writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge about repair of FRP components considered as asset.
  • Knowledge of APQP & PPAP is strong asset.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective internal working relationships with all levels in the organization and external clients.
  • Able to work both in a team/matrix environment and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Creative individual capable of thinking outside-the-box for finding solutions to problems.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
