Job Description


As a Mechanical Designer, you will develop world-class mechatronic products and technologies for sophisticated automation equipment. We are looking for a creative individual, an out of the box thinker who still has practical grounding. Someone who can grasp the fundamentals of a problem and solve the problem in effective and innovative ways.Duties include generating new concepts, designing and validating prototypes, finalizing production designs, and assisting in the transfer of new innovations to sales and production. These products require a strong combination of mechanics, electronics and software. The primary focus of this role is mechanical design, but the solutions require a multi-disciplinary approach.This position will contribute to new and next generation products and other industry leading mechatronic technologies. The Innovation Center is an exciting venture developing state of the art technologies within a large, industry-leading, global automation supplier.Capabilities

  • Proficiency in creating high performance, robust and elegant mechanical designs.
  • Ability to deal with high unknowns up front as challenges are often being solved for the first time.
  • Adaptability to quickly apply new learnings from analysis and prototypes into designs.
  • Team player able to communicate effectively in status meetings, perform design reviews, and contribute to solving challenging problems.
Responsibilities
  • Generate concepts to solve new customer mechatronic problems/needs.
  • Perform engineering calculations to validate new concepts.
  • Generate detailed designs for prototypes ensuring all purchased and manufactured parts meet acceptable cost/performance/delivery targets. Support operations in the build of prototypes.
  • Contribute to test plans for prototypes and either execute the test plan or support others that are performing the test plan.
  • Analyze test results, mitigate risks and resolve the unknowns. Get agreement on final designs both internally and with customers and finalize production designs.
  • Support Sales and Operations during the transfer to production of new products/innovations.
  • Work in compliance with divisional health, safety and environmental procedures.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of 5+ years\' Mechanical Design experience is preferred. Exceptional candidates with less experience will be considered. Responsibilities, title, and compensation will be set based on the successful candidate.
  • Proficient in mechanical design utilizing 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Thorough knowledge of drafting principles including GD&T
  • Strong ability to conceptualize and create solutions for complex design requirements with a products mindset.
  • A working knowledge of common machine shop techniques.
  • Capability in these areas is an asset: FEA, magnetics, thermal analysis.
  • Familiarity in these areas is an asset: industrial automation, control systems, electrical designs, electronics.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
Education
  • A post-secondary engineering degree or diploma in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Systems Design, Engineering Physics, or equivalent.
