We are seeking Measurement, Automation and Communications Technologists to join our team in a field-based position. This position is responsible for the installation, operation and maintenance of systems, facilities, and equipment used in natural gas measurement, electronics & instrumentation, process control & automation, and SCADA communications. This position may also assist the Foreman or Senior Technologist with large scale or complex projects, provide mentorship and technical development of staff, monitoring of contract work, and other related tasks.

What You Get to Do:

  • Assist with or independently install, commission, inspect, calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot a variety of systems in the field including:
  • Instrumentation such as flow, temperature, pressure, and level sensors including smart transmitters, solenoid valves, supply panels, etc.
  • Analytical equipment such as Gas Chromatographs, H2S Analyzers, and Moisture Analyzers
  • Measurement devices such as orifice, turbine, rotary, and ultrasonic meters, and associated flow computers
  • Pneumatic and electronic valve controllers and positioners
  • RTUs, PLCs, DCS
  • Network communications equipment
  • Power systems such as solar, TEGs, UPS
  • Other associated systems such as odorizers, flame and gas detection, oilers, ESD valves, compressors, burner management systems, various industrial communication protocols, etc.
  • Tube fitting installation and tube bending.
  • Low-voltage DC wiring.
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and designing activities and complete work in accordance with Company standards, procedures, and policies as well as external codes and applicable procedures. This includes recommendations of modifications to existing systems to enhance functionality.
  • Provide a lead role in coordination and completion of Capital and Operations and Maintenance projects, assisting or providing technical guidance, training, mentoring and direction to colleagues including other operating groups as required.
  • Perform Hazard Assessments, Worksite Safety Inspections and QC inspections to ensure that work is performed in compliance with Company quality and safety Standards.
  • Interpret Engineering drawings, specifications, and work packages (such as P&IDs, I/O module wiring diagrams, electronic block diagrams, hazardous area diagrams, etc), provide feedback for implementation including submission of "As - Built" drawings and provide input to facility & system design.
  • Direct and monitor activities of contractors; assist with scheduling and coordination of contractors and ensure adherence to ATCO's Safety, Environment and Quality guidelines and procedures.
  • Perform joint interest inspections (Measurement Canada field and GC inspections).
  • Prepare Capital Improvement Requests (CIRs) and related reports pertaining to system problems or enhancements.
  • Interface with other internal groups such as Engineering, Field Operations, Measurement Integrity, Control Centre, etc.
  • Interface with other external groups such as producers, industrial customers, Measurement Canada, vendors and suppliers, etc.
  • Assist in safety tailgates and team meetings.
  • Determine and resolve deviations or inconsistencies related to measurement points within ATCO Natural Gas systems.
  • Assist with material requisitions and receipt, stock inventory
  • Keep up to date on technological changes in general and as applicable to company systems.
  • Perform other duties as may be required.
Requirements:
  • Diploma in Instrumentation, Electronics or Telecommunications from a two-year technology program with a recognized technical institute.
  • Eligible to be recognized by A.S.E.T. as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET).
  • Must have a valid Alberta Class "5" drivers' license and a valid In-House Operator's Certificate.
  • Demonstrated competencies and experience as a Measurement, Automation and Communications Technologist.
  • Must have familiarity and working knowledge of applicable Company and regulatory body standards, codes, policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and PC applications (Microsoft suite).
  • Experience with IBM Maximo is an asset
  • Experience working with a midstream or downstream natural gas pipeline operator is an asset
  • Understanding and experience with microprocessor and mechanical based measurement and control equipment
  • Demonstrated abilities in the areas of:
  • Verbal and written communication skills, decision making skills, and strong work ethics, and ability to maintain and promote good working relationships and excellent customer service.
  • Time management and organizational skills with an ability to coordinate and prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Sound judgment, self-initiative and the ability to work alone and plan and direct the work of others.
  • The ability to provide strong mentorship, leadership, and group facilitation.
  • Endorse and adapt to changes including technology, equipment, programs, and work procedures.
  • Required to travel throughout the ATCO Natural Gas service area territory to perform assigned duties and stay out of town as required.
  • May be required to fulfill standby duties and assist in emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
  • Must be prepared to work in all kinds of weather.
  • Normal good health for this type of work.
