We are looking for a Chemical Engineering Technology co-op student to join our Control Centre Team for a 4 to 12-month placement.
The Control Centre Wildfire Monitoring & Reporting role is responsible for tracking wildfire activity in Alberta, assessing risk to ATCO Gas and Pipeline assets, and ensuring timely reporting and escalation during wildfire season. This role is critical in safeguarding ATCO Gas and Pipeline infrastructure during wildfire season. By ensuring accurate monitoring, timely reporting, and coordinated emergency response, the position directly supports operational safety, community protection, and business continuity.
Who you are:
Must be enrolled in a co-op (or internship) program at a recognized Canadian university.
Enrolled currently in a Chemical Engineering Technology program
Situational awareness & risk assessment: Ability to interpret wildfire maps, GIS data, and proximity indicators
Technical proficiency: Comfortable using mapping tools (ArcFM, GIS layers) and SharePoint reporting systems
Communication: Clear, concise written and verbal communication for updates, liaison contact, and incident reporting
Decision-making: Ability to determine reporting thresholds, escalate appropriately, and support emergency response actions
Collaboration: Work effectively with Operations, Supervisors, Specialists, and IMT members under time-sensitive conditions
Attention to detail: Accurate measurement, documentation, and tracking of wildfire data and asset information
Adaptability: Capable of operating effectively during escalating wildfire conditions and changing operational priorities

What you will do:
Monitor Alberta wildfire activity using the ATCO Wildfire Map, GIS tools, and Alberta Emergency Alerts * Identify wildfires that meet reporting criteria
  • Create and update wildfire reports, including screenshots, distance measurements, and asset-specific details
  • Communicate with the Alberta Wildfire Industry Liaison for fire direction, containment updates, and operational impacts
  • Send notification emails and ongoing updates for status changes, evacuation alerts/orders, and fire growth
  • Support or participate in Regional Assessment Meetings and Incident Management Teams when conditions escalate
  • Coordinate with Operations, Supervisors, Specialists, and IMT members to gather information and plan responses
  • Maintain accurate wildfire tracking records and contribute to weekly wildfire communications
Adhere to industry standard control room management best practices inclusive of fatigue management, alarm management, information management, quality management, and competency management.
Actively participates in the safety culture
Participate in appropriate training to effectively perform assigned tasks and responsibilities.
