Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Manager, the Math and Science Technologist works as an integral part of the Library Learning Commons (LLC) team, providing discipline-specific assistance to individual students or groups of students. The incumbent also liaises with cross-College departments in Academic and Student Services, as well as the Fanshawe Student Union to determine student needs for math and science support. The incumbent prepares and delivers workshops which allow students to practice, apply and/or demonstrate the skills necessary to improve their mathematical and science skills.
The incumbent also provides direction and assistance to students, faculty, and staff using the LLC resources and services and provides back-up in other LLC areas as required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides math and science support in the Library Learning Commons to students who are enrolled in any College Math and Science courses, including appointments, drop-ins, and referrals
When meeting with a student, the incumbent:
+ Reviews the student's math and/or science academic work
+ Communicates with the student to determine the best approaches to assisting with problem areas
+ Reviews the correct math/science principles, procedures, or methods
+ Provides the students with appropriate resources or materials to assist with academic success and for independent review and study
+ Demonstrates how to access various platforms and technologies related to math and science support Prepares and delivers workshops to students
Provides training to part-time technologists, as required
Schedules and records the students' use of math/science services
Library Learning Commons Support:
+ Provides assistance to students at the LLC desk using the resources available online and in print
+ Guides students in the process of developing research skills and strategies in evaluation search results
+ Guides students in finding relevant information to support their academic needs outside of the classroom by connecting them to relevant College-wide services
Qualifications
Post-secondary 4-year degree in Mathematics or Science, with a focus on Chemistry, Physics, or Engineering
Minimum 1 year of related experience working in a tutorial or educational setting
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Knowledge of Chemistry and Physics is required
Demonstrated strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team
Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
