Native Education College (NEC) opened its doors in 1967 and became British Columbia's largest private Indigenous College. NEC's purpose is to contribute to an Indigenous, holistic experience that positions the Indigenous learner to uphold their responsibility and obligations to their family, and nation of origin as autonomous Peoples. NEC provides culturally relevant education and training for Indigenous Peoples to pursue career aspirations and enhance academic goals in alignment with their diverse cultural identities and traditional knowledge. The NEC longhouse offers access to many resources and in-house support that includes cultural and spiritual support, funding, counselling, and career advising from a culturally authentic lens.
Position Summary
NEC is seeking a Math Tutor for the Pathways Program to provide personalized academic support in mathematics. This casual contract position will focus on building students' confidence and foundational math skills. The Math Tutor will work closely with Indigenous learners, adapting teaching methods to respect their cultural values while enhancing their understanding of mathematical concepts. The role will help foster a positive and supportive learning environment to ensure the academic success of students.
Main Responsibilities:
oProvide one-on-one and small group tutoring in mathematics, ranging from basic arithmetic to higher-level concepts and support the learning in the classroom
oAdapt tutoring methods and resources to be culturally relevant and accessible to Indigenous students.
oTrack student progress and provide regular assessments and constructive feedback.
oCreate a safe, supportive learning environment that encourages students to ask questions and explore mathematical concepts.
oCollaborate with faculty and staff to identify gaps in students' knowledge and tailor lessons accordingly.
oSupport students in overcoming math anxiety and building their confidence in mathematical abilities.
oMaintain accurate records of tutoring sessions and student progress.
Preferred Qualifications:
oA Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Education, or a related field.
o1-2 years of tutoring or teaching experience, with a preference for experience working with Indigenous students.
oExperience in creating individualized learning strategies and tutoring plans.
oStrong knowledge of mathematical concepts and teaching methods.
oCultural sensitivity and awareness when working with Indigenous learners.
oExcellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
oPatience and the ability to help students build confidence in math.

Appointment to this casual-contract position will require a formal criminal record check should a recent one not be on file, the details of which may preclude finalizing an offer of employment.
