Math Background Tutorials (MBT) is a workshop designed to help incoming and current students prepare for university-level math and numeracy courses. It aims to ensure a smooth transition and to help students succeed in university math courses. Students will prepare for university coursework by getting a comprehensive review of essential concepts in algebra, trigonometry, and functions as well as discover effective study techniques and problem-solving strategies.

Training: July 24 and 25 from 10am to 4pm.

Program dates: 2-hour sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in August (Aug 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28) or 1-week intensive August 18-21st, 10am to 4pm.


Note the above schedule is subject to change in accordance with program needs.

Salary

: $53.31/hour


Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications:




This position is open to individuals who have demonstrated a sound knowledge of Calculus with Trigonometry. TA experience in a first-year calculus at the University of Toronto Mississauga is a requirement. Individuals selected for this role must be available for and attend all training sessions (in person at UTM July 24 and 25).

Preferred Qualifications:




Advanced knowledge of linear algebra and probability. Demonstrated experience working with first-year university students.


For this position, prior experience is more important than the opportunity to gain experience.

Description of Duties:




The Sessional Instructional Assistant (SIA) will:

Participate in a two-day training session prior to the beginning of the MBT Workshop. Facilitate daily or twice weekly tutorial sessions following the MBT workshop methodology for the duration of the MBT Workshop and participate in a daily debrief at the end of each session. Grade quizzes and assist students in solving problems during sessions.
