Place of Work



Computer desk for this role will be located at Main Office / Warehouse #1 at 7730 34 St NW, Edmonton. Regular travel between Warehouse #2 and Main Office / Warehouse #1 (4103 84 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T6B 2Z3).

Position Summary



The Materials Test Engineer (E.I.T.) supports the operation of a destructive testing laboratory serving pipe, flange and fitting products. You will plan and execute mechanical and metallurgical tests, ensure data integrity to ISO/IEC 17025 principles, and translate results into clear engineering reports aligned with ASME/CSA/API requirements. You will also assist the Engineering Manager in drawing development using autoCAD software.

Key Responsibilities



Test Planning & Execution



- Develop test plans, fixtures, and sampling per drawings, ITPs, and standards.

- Perform tensile, yield, elongation and reduction-of-area tests (ASTM E8/A370), impact/Charpy (ASTM E23/A370), hardness (HBW/HRC/HV per ASTM E10/E18/E92), spark chemical analysis and XRF PMI as applicable.

Metallurgy & Analysis



- Conduct sectioning, mounting, grinding/polishing, and etching (ASTM E3/E407); perform micro/macro examinations, grain size and ferrite/phase estimation.

- Participate in NCRs, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions with Production/QA.

Laboratory Infrastructure



- Assemble and maintain laboratory equipment.

Design Development



- Develop part drawings for the in-house pipe, flange and fitting product lines per applicable standards.

- Develop part drawings on an as-needed basis to assist in manufacturing of unfinished products and custom product.

Data Quality & Reporting



- Calibrate/verify equipment (load frames, extensometers, Charpy pendulum, furnaces, microscopes) and maintain calibration records.

- Capture raw data, perform calculations, and issue traceable test reports with MTR/MPS cross-references; ensure retention and traceability per internal QMS and ISO/IEC 17025 practices.

- Maintain uncertainty, repeatability/reproducibility awareness; contribute to inter-laboratory comparisons.

Compliance & Safety



- Execute work to applicable codes/standards (ASME IX, ASME II, ASME B31.3 context; CSA Z245 series; API/ASTM methods) and client specifications.

- Develop and follow laboratory SOPs, risk assessments, and PPE requirements; champion 5S and safe handling of samples, sharp edges, pressurized specimens, and hot work.

Continuous Improvement



- Implement method development and validation, gauge R&R, and throughput improvements.

- Train technicians on methods, fixtures, and data entry; support audits (client, ABSA/ISO, internal).

Qualifications



B.Sc. in Materials/Metallurgical, Mechanical, or Welding Engineering (or equivalent). Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) with APEGA (or eligible); intent to pursue P.Eng. 0-3+ years in a mechanical/metallurgical test lab or fabrication/QC environment. Hands-on experience with UTM/load frames, Charpy impact testers, hardness testers, ovens/furnaces, and sample prep equipment. Working knowledge of ASTM E8/E23/A370, E10/E18/E92, awareness of CSA Z245.11/.12. Proficient with Excel for calculations, charting, and statistics; able to write clear technical reports. Ability to use AutoCAD to generate part drawings. Strong organization, attention to detail, and communication across shifts and disciplines. Class 5 Alberta Driver's License.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)



On-time completion of test work vs. schedule. First-pass report acceptance (internal/client/regulatory). Equipment uptime & calibration compliance. Audit findings closure time and 5S/safety metrics. Cycle time from sample receipt to report issuance.

Working Conditions



Lab/shop environment with routine lifting up to ~20 kg, noise, and hot/cold samples. Day shift with occasional overtime/weekend support to meet project milestones.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,000.00-$75,000.00 per year
