The Role
The Material Handler is responsible for accurately and timely staging, moving, and tracking raw materials and packaging supplies to and from the production floor. This role ensures materials are available to support continuous production operations, maintains accurate inventory counts, and supports warehouse organization and efficiency within a food manufacturing environment.
This position is required to be an in-person role at our current manufacturing facility in Vaughan. We are evaluating a potential facility move to support our growth and expansion, and this role will be crucial to helping ensure a smooth transition of the company's offices.
Main Responsibilities:
Stage and deliver materials to production lines based on daily production schedules, ensuring the right materials are available at the right time to support seamless production operations.
Track and record all material movements to and from the production floor, maintaining visibility of quantities issued, used, and returned to ensure accurate real-time inventory control.
Maintain proper material identification and rotation by ensuring all raw materials and packaging supplies are clearly labelled and handled according to FIFO (First In, First Out) principles and food safety guidelines.
Coordinate closely with production and warehouse teams to anticipate material needs, address shortages promptly, and support an uninterrupted flow of supplies throughout all production shifts.
Record data accurately using Excel or inventory management systems, maintaining up-to-date logs of material transfers, usage, and adjustments to support precise inventory reporting and traceability.
Participate in daily, weekly, and monthly inventory counts, assisting with reconciliation of variances, investigating discrepancies, and supporting continuous improvement in inventory accuracy.
Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment safely and efficiently, following all safety protocols and maintaining required certifications.
Keep all material staging and warehouse areas organized and clean, adhering to 5S principles or other lean practices to promote a safe and efficient work environment.
Report any material shortages, damages, or quality concerns immediately, working collaboratively with Production leads and quality assurance to resolve issues quickly and maintain product integrity.
Comply with all company safety, food safety, and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) standards, ensuring materials are handled and stored in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
Skills & Qualifications:
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required, with at least two years of experience in material handling, warehouse operations, or a related role within a manufacturing environment (food manufacturing preferred).
Equipment Operation: A valid forklift certification is highly preferred; must be capable of safely operating forklifts, pallet jacks, and other standard material handling equipment.
Technical Skills: Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel for data entry, tracking material usage, and maintaining accurate inventory records; familiarity with ERP or inventory systems is a plus.
Inventory Knowledge: Strong understanding of warehouse operations, inventory control principles, and material flow processes, including FIFO and lot traceability.
Attention to Detail: Demonstrated accuracy and thoroughness in handling materials, labelling, and data recording to ensure compliance with food safety and quality requirements.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, stand or walk for extended periods, and work in various warehouse and production floor conditions.
Communication and Teamwork: Excellent communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with operations and production leads, warehouse, and plant personnel to meet material demand.
Reliability and Initiative: Dependable, punctual, and proactive in identifying and addressing material flow or inventory issues before they impact production.
Safety and Compliance Mindset: Committed to maintaining a safe working environment and following all safety, food safety, and sanitation regulations.
Adaptability and Work Ethic: Capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced production setting, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability for assigned tasks.
Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, or adjusted shifts as needed to support production demands and meet business objectives.
